Charles Darwin - the origin of species?

I don't really know but that would shows the change in science taking place at the time. why do they have to be non-fiction?

How about;

John Stuart Mill-On Liberty.

The text directly concerns the position of the individual to the state, and thus society, examining issues such as free speech. Written c.1859, which fits well into the relevant period. :)

Jeremy Bentham's 'Utilitarianism' could also be useful, influencing Mill, and proposing an ethical doctrine 'the happiness of the greatest number'.

Hmm.. Possibly Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels-The Communist Manifesto?

adam smith - wealth of nations is one that has been suggested to us. he is actually more well known around economics circles but it would be good in relation to P&P and N&S coz it deals with, well namely wealth ahaha but also social classes and esp in relation to N&S, labour industries
