ive just gotten my new mac computer
the screeen is absolutely hugeeee and the resolution is EXCELLENT!
the main reason i got it was because i needed quality for my graphics + design course...

does any1 else use MACs out there... for graphics use, or just for normal computer use?
i want to put all my programs on it that i had on my old pc.. such as limewire, mIRC, 'windows' media player lol, winamp....etc.. but i dont knw if it will work?? lol (sorry im completely confused haha)

i downloaded MSN, but its a total standard version.. im an msn junkie with emoticons and got the whole display pic thang going on - MSN ON MACS SUCKS! LOL
i know ill live.. but im jst having a bit of a rant.

so what else? can i basically treat my mac (lol) like a normal computer and download normal programs?

they are compiled seperately... so no u can't just transfer the junk on ur PC to mac.... u need to download the MAC compatible version

Get aMSN - the only thing it doesn't do is send files while you chat, I believe, but otherwise it's got all the bells and whistles.

You can't treat your Mac like it can run PC software, because it can't run Windows software. Many popular Windows programs, such as Limewire, have been "ported" from Windows to Macintosh - a Mac-compatible version has been made.

To get software for your new Mac, may I suggest:

If you're doing graphics work, do you have Photoshop? A freeware alternative is the GIMP - the feel of it is different, but it's comparable in results.

A program that makes my Mac more l33t is:
MacJanitor - contrary to popular belief, I don't leave my mac on 24/7, and so the scheduled cleanups don't happen. MacJanitor is a freeware program that lets me perform the scheduled cleanups at a time when the Mac *is* on.

I disagree, "amsn" was pretty poorly made...

since it was designed for multiple platforms the user interface is too generic and confusing.

adiumX was designed from the ground up for MacOSX

It supports pictures and doesn't crash

i dunno, I haven't used it personally, but everyone I know with a mac uses it so there must be some reason.

EDIT: the interface is kinda like iChat

I'm having some trouble setting up my MSN nick on Adium.. It whirrs its little clock and tells me: "myemailaddress@hotmail.com (MSN) : Gaim error

Unable to authenticate: .NET Messenger Service" - nothing in the help wiki about that, so I dashed off a little email to tech support. ICQ-wise it seems very nice, although different to MSN, fairly intuitive. I've downloaded some extra emoticons too...

I don't want to make you cry, but my parents bought me a mac 6 months ago...I just got fed up and put together a new pc with some saved up cash last week. They're absolutely pointless for doing anything, unless you run some sorta business i'd stay clear

I dislike macs because of the lack of power-user features, the lack of apps in general and the compatibility difficulties.

We use it just to play music, as an alternative to a cd-player n shit.

I know it was running slow due to the 256, but the biggest issue I had (once I wasn't just using it for the net, email, and writing assignments) was that I couldn't play any of the games I wanted and heaps of programs wouldn't run.

The reason that a conventional PC won't boot into OSX is that OSX is based on firmware windows in bios. That said enterprising enthusiats will doubtless manage it - however it will not be mainstream.

The reason to buy an intel-mac (or mintel to mimic wintel) is that the OS will be tightly integrated into the hardware (as with the G5 now), this yields stability and speed improvements. OSX is also a more advanced OS which yields further speed and performance.

The average mac-user I would argue has little to no interest in anything beyond the 'purtiness' of macs.....

Via 'yellowbox' (something Jobs bought with him from his previous company) apps will be able to be more easily coded for OSX. Also coding will be simplified as it won't be neccassery to code for a different architecture as it is now.

The real reason for the IBM PPC to intel shift is because of supply problems. The PPC chips being produced in such small quantities means they are expensive to make. The limited sales of PPC chips translate into a limited budget for developement and upgrading. Apparently apple has had problems with late shipments and the like.

The transition means that apple hardwrae will now experience far greater economics of scale which will translate (or rather should) into lower prices. There will be a much larger budget going into chip developement (eg Intels) so chips will advance more rapidly etc etc. Also it will become much easier and cheaper to upgrade a mac as there will be by neccessity greater cross-over with pc components.

On the down side: I prefer AMDs to pentiums (though intel has made large improvements especially in the P-M range which we will see translate to the desktop). And now Intel holds almost a complete monopoly on all CPUs in pre-built computers.

My wishlist is simple: a hardware independent OSX, as this will make the DIY mac possible and OSX actually attractive to power-users.
