Nine-Year-Old's Abortion Outrages Brazil's Catholic Church - TIME

Summary:

  • 9 year-old girl in Brazil is raped and impreganted with twins by her stepfather
  • Family opts to abort, which is only legal in Brazil in cases where the mother was raped or has a health risk.
  • The Brazilian Archbishop responds by stating that the abortion was a crime and was against "God's laws" and then subsequently excommunicates the family.

The family and the doctors who performed the abortion are to be excommunicated.

Descpicable. I've been following the whole sad tale on Pharyngula.

Look, ofc it's a horrific tragedy and v difficult for the carrier, but if you accept the proposition that life begins at conception, then you have to accept that the twins have committed no crime themselves and have a right to exist.

And the alternative is that the girl will die after giving birth to twins... what crimes has the girl committed?

(Not really wanting to pick a fight, just want to see where this goes...)

Well if medical opinion said that she would certainly die, I would offer that two lives can be better than one. That sort of self-sacrifice would be a beautiful example to the world

That's a pretty big 'if' though. If the 'child' does not even have a partially functional or formed brain, then is its life more important than a currently living fully-formed human being? It's like choosing a plant over a human...

Obviously I meant that it should still be her choice in these circs - just not an easy one
And obviously the Church's over-reaction is completely uncalled for and idiotic. They shouldn't be getting involved, let alone excommunicating the poor kid.

Well the step-father should definitely be excommunicated. And imprisoned/executed depending on the law.

The church however should be supporting the child, who has just gone through a horrific experience.
