I agree with Bookie, Nutley and Gallen would not be out of place in the green & gold jersey, they can take the load off Fitzy and Hindy and would make plenty of ground for Lockyer and Joey. We all saw what Nutley is capable of when he played origin and should have been a certainty, and as for Gallen, he is young and would help Aus in years to come so they should bring him in now to get him started and establish a regular team.

Statistically I'm sure Nutley is a better player, and to be honest its kinda hard to answer this question. It's very much a presence that a bloke like O'Meley brings to a team - it's why people notice O'Meley and they don't notice Nutley. I'll be honest and agree with you - if Nutley were playing for a higher profile team he would be more likely candidate (like a bloke like Ricketson would go under the radar had he not been playing for the Roosters).
Dont take it in a bad way, but you have little idea eh? It is because he plays for the Sharks. If he ever played for a big name team (South Queensland and Sharks are on his CV) who got so many wraps from the media [ie Bulldogs, Rorts, Stains], he'd be a shoo-in. Gallen is only in his first really good year, but if he doesn't make City next year I will seriously [and quote me on this] send emails terrorizing to bomb the NSWRL headquarters.

And Rewster, thanks for your opinion - maybe all Rorts fans aren't that bad...

I know it's not the case this year, but considering teams like the Bulldogs, Roosters and Penrith have had such great runs the past few years, naturally their players were looked at first due to their constant exposure. The Sharks haven't had as much success (again, I'm not talking about this year) so you know best that their players are over looked. I haven't seen much of Gallen but Nutley def deserves to be in the side. Maybe next year eh?

As a Bulldogs fan who has angrily observed their crappiness during 2005, Ryan and Mason should not have been named. I guess Mason could instill fear into the opponent. Whenever I see him I laugh, but ya never know...

Well, are they gonna stick with loyalty or form? It shots me, because either way, the sharks get jipped. I'll just watch as someone like Skandalis gets picked on form, however they stay loyal to losers like Mason. Either way, Nutley gets jipped. Sort of like with Kimmorley in origin. No doubt he had a shocker, but there "we'll stick by him" bullshit was so full of it. I hate NSW and I hate Australia.

yeh players should be rewarded for form, but not solely on form mind you. steve price for instance should be in every kangaroos side from now until he retires because he is pure class, but yes in the case of mason one good game against the poms on debut means nothing now.

I dont say much on this topic because, to be honest bookie, you can argue it as frequently as you want but Gallen will probably never see a represntative jersey with his name on it. OK, so possibly City vs Country, but never NSW or Australia. As you have pointed out, he's a shark, and those boys dont get the credit they deserve.

As for Nuts, well, i think his chances for origin next year arent to bad to be honest. So far he's had one game, which he lost, but he was just about the best Qld had that night and showed his class and ability to step up a gear. So im not getting my hopes up, but I think it is very possible for Nutley to make SOO again....possible, not definite!

Maybe I should make it clearer. I really don't think you understand what the presence of certain players brings to a team. ie O'Meley can lift his team so that they win: and although your a Sharks fan - lets be honest - blokes like Gallen and Nutley may work their tits off but they don't lift their teams in the same way as the great players do. It is a hard thing to explain: someone who has never played the game mightn't understand what I mean.
A selector would think like this: prove you can make a team win and we'll give you a shot.

I sort of agree, sort of disagree.

Nutley is EXACTLY the type of player that can lift a team. Gallen isn't quite like that, because he isn't as prominent. But I feel that Nutley fits the mould perfectly.

However, the difference between Nutley and, say, Price, O'Meley and Bailey, is that Nutley doesn't quite have the ability to WIN a match for a team, whereas the other three DO have that ability. I'm not sure about O'Meley's statistics normally, but I do know that Price and Bailey are workhorses as well as matchwinners. In the Final against Cronulla on Saturday, I think Bailey's combined tackles + hitups was something like 55 or 56. Generally, if a front rower can get that combined count to 40, they have had a very good match.

If I had to choose Australia's starting front rowers tonight, in considering form and fitness, I would choose Civoniceva and Bailey in guernseys 8 and 10, with Simpson (he is good enough to play for Australia but doesn't have room in the second row, so he plays as a front rower), and Price on the bench. Nutley would come next.

Glad to see you left Ryles out of that list DRAGONZ. I'd have the same squad I guess, except probably have Nutley ahead of Simpson.... but then again, thats probably bias, I just feel Nutley is a better mould. I'd also have Price and Civoniceva (hope thats the right spelling) swap places, I'd start Price... but then again, Price would be a better impact player IMO... I dunno, maybe you got it perfect :)

Simpson is more a utility forward who comes off the bench - that is his value (he could pretty much play any forward position bar hooker)- and why he will probably get a bench position over a few players who are specialist front or back rowers. You want Price to start the match, as he will probably play most of it. Civoniceva is handy off the bench as well, as he can pack into the backrow as well.
On another note O'Meley's workrate would fit in between that of Price's and Bailey's (with Price having the greater workrate)- the thing is- when Bailey does things he does them well. Just because I'm bored I'm going to name my current Australian team:
1) Mini
2) Matt King
3) Matt Cooper
4) Mark Gasnier
5) Matt Sing
6) Darren Lockyer
7) Andrew Johns
8) Steve Price
9) Danny Buderus
10) Luke Bailey
11) Nathan Hindmarsh
12) Craig Fitsgibbon
13) Ben Kennedy

14) Shaun Berrigan
15) Steve Simpson
16) Petero Civinoceva
17) Ben Creagh

Gallen will still have a chance, hes only 24. Just a question of whether he tops the lists again.

Nutley probably wont get in because they'll pick Price and Civoniceva ahead of him, plus he's 32.

No, I understand what you mean, first of all, I'll accept Gallen isnt a influential charcter just yet (he's 24). now to Nutley. Nutley plays at the Sharks. You can put Andrew Johns or Steve Price at the Sharks and they wouldn't lift. Nutley played for Queensland and lifted them. Ahhhhhhh - the first time where he rolled that shitcat Janet Ryles back into his own in goal from 10m out. Second time returning off a dropout and running into 4 shitcats at once, including disloacting that poof Fitzgibbons finger.

Yes. So considering form and fitness, you'd put Bailey (who ran more sideway metres than the Peach last weekend) and Civoniceva (whos not propelling the Broncos pack enough) ahead of Nutley (who's had average of about 150m a game). Plus, every game I see Bailey and Civoniceva play, theyre taken off after 20 minutes. Fitness, I think not. Nutley can play 80 minutes though. Leagues turning into union now. Just pick the big guys.

I'll try my unbiased squad;

1 - Hodgson
2 - Best
3 - Cooper
4 - Gasnier
5 - Grothe
6 - Lockyer
7 - Johns
13 - Kennedy
12 - Price
11 - Hindmarsh or Fitzgibbon (whichever one sucks less media cock)
10 - Civoniceva
9 - Buderus
8 - Nutley

14 - Simpson (if Johns is playing) / Gallen (if Johns ain't playing)
15 - Hindmarsh/Fitzgibbon (the bigger cocksucker)
16 - Berrigan/Wing
17 - O'Meley

18th man: Barrett

Here are those combined average counts (hitups + tackles);

PROPS
Nutley 50.2
Price 44.3
Bailey 43.6
Ryles 39.3
O'Meley 39.0
Civoniceva 36.7
Clinton 36.0

BACKROWERS
Fitzgibbon 50.5
Hindmarsh 47.6
Gallen 46.0
Simpson 46.0
Waterhouse 41.9
Kennedy 39.0

So backto the comparative study of those selected - HOW THE HELL DID CLINTON AND WATERHOUSE GET IN?

Fair squad. I don't agree with Clinton getting in atleast; but going on those stats you're saying Kennedy shouldn't have made the squad either. I think most everyone will say he is the form lock of the competition at the moment.

geez mate ur a real hard-core gangsta threatening to be a future terrorist, i bet they get emails from fukheads like u all the time. Get over ur avg sharks team, who ride on the form of Noddy and Vagana to some extent. Gallen's not even in the top 5 lock's in the NRL. He's behind Carroll, Kennedy, Creagh, Waterhouse, Menzies (played lock for most of his career), Andrew Ryan, then maybe Gallen. Nutley's alrite, but is pretty old and not a long-term rep candidate. So stop having a bitch mate and be thankful ur players arent in the rep team with a chance of sustaining a career threatening injury

? Half the players you've mentioned aren't specialist locks: ie you wouldn't consider them in the ratings. I guarentee you that Andrew Johns would be a better 5/8 and hooker than a lot of the players in these positions: but if I were to say Johns is the best 5/8 in the comp you'd look at me funny... All the players you've mentioned (and Gallen) are quality players: and all have basically proved themselves to be good players. Gallen workload wise is better than alot of them -as I've mentioned before statistics don't show everything- but surely they show something. I'm not saying you're wrong - just think about it.

maybe you should start watching games where the sharks aren't playing, like the games being played this week. im not agree with what his saying, but he does have a point. most of the posts made by you in this thread are of you bitching about the sharks. it shits me man. i propose for next season you have a sharks thread so you can bitch and moan to your hearts content about how under rated the team is and how great gallen is and how much you want his babies.

and on a side note, i thought it was interesting to see most of you had berrigan in your side, even if it was only on the bench, after some called him 'undeserving' not that long ago. not sure what the logic is there.

I think based on utility value, Berrigan would have the edge over the underperforming Craig Wing. However Bowen could also fit into the utility category and to a lesser extent Craig Gower though he cant really play in the centres if needed.
