I got a Sony Vaio for $1790 suits me well enough, 2ghz centrino processor, 60gb HD, 512mb ram 2.4kg with battery has all I need and is light enough for me. When I was looking it was between an ASUS which are reasonably priced and pretty good and Sony, I ended up choosing based on specs but both were reasonably priced.
Toshiba's are also well priced but a bit bulkier than sony and asus. I wouldnt go for Acer or compaq based on problems I have had with desktops]
Dell are cheap, a bit bulky but not too bad.
