optusnet cable keeps disconnecting (1 Viewer)

i have optusnet cable, and my modem is a motorola surfboard SB4100

for the last week or so, my net will spontaneously disconnect... no idea why.

the lights will all turn off, and then the top yellow lights will flash, but won't connect

i tried jiggling around, rearranging and reconnecting the leads which are linked to the main thingy, that works sometimes but yeah

is it just me and/or my hardware, or is there something wrong with optus?

Hm, I have an SB4200. Each light flashes when it does a test. What are the order of lights on yours ?

Mine go Power/Receive/Send/Online/Active.

So, if the Power light flashes, then turns solid, then the Recieve and Send lights keep flashing, then it resets, and starts again - then you have a problem connecting to the service which may very well be on Optus's end.

However, I'm not sure what the order of lights are on yours. Check your manual - it should have a troubleshooting box with each light, it's function and what errors can be shown through it =)

for some unknown reasons.

and i need to do a power cycle on the modem for it to kick back in.

Happens for me too. As fatmuscle says, a quick restart of the modem gets it going again.

MedNez suggested to me that maybe lightning fried the modem; this might be right actually, cos the problems started after those thunderstorms happened...

Pull the power cord from the back of the modem, works every time Give it 60 seconds to let the capacitors and other electronics drain, and then plug it back in. Then it'll do it's power cycle, and may go power up fine.

umm i have an SB4101 and the only time im disconnected is when i go over my download limit

Same thing happened to me about a year and a half ago. For about half a year my modem would reset itself. Towards the end, the modem would take up to an hour to go back to it's online state. Then it happened, my modem reset. It tried to go back to the online state, but wouldn't get past the send light. This went on for a whole day so I decided to call optus. A tech came around the following day, did some test and I had to get a new modem. Since then, my modem has never reset itself.
So yeah, from my story, it could be that your modem is on it's way out. It is happening to my friend on the same node here, so it's not an optus problem as such (well, it could be the actual line, but doubt it).

maybe you could try phoning optus, but you will have to wait on the line for about an hour, and they doing something like ping your modem, i dont know, but they might suggest something.

babydoll i'm sorry but it sounds as though your modem is on its way out and you will have to buy a new modem...
now i would advice you to look on ebay for a 2nd hand modem because it will be one hundred times cheaper than buying a new one
there should be plenty around....ask around on www.whirlpool.net.au forum

my optus cable was very very slow a week ago, but i restarted my modem and all was good, i think optus at the moment is doing some network grooming, people are getting new IPs
so restarting your modem can help

Does Optus have a warranty period or something ? So if your modem breaks through it's own causes you can get it replaced free?

Actually the only other thing I can suggest is updating the firmware on the modem, or the modem drivers. When we first got our SB4200, every few minutes, or at random intervals while on the Internet, the computer would reset.

Updated the USB drivers, and it worked fine.

Babydoll don't buy a new modem yet ring Optus.
I have bigpond but run the same modem.
This exact same problem has happened to me a few times, each time the tech has come over and it has been a problem with the cable outside my house on the street. I presume the problem may be the same for you.
If you want to do something prior to Optus, try renewing your ip address and if this still doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall your modem drivers.

Within a certain period. I think it might be one year (or could even be less).
