This is involving Oxidation Number.

Is this still in the syllabus?

tip:
the oxidising agent/oxidant is what CAUSES something else to oxidise, it itself reduces
the reducing agent/reductant is what CAUSES somethign else to reduce, it itself oxidises

in the conversion of h2o2 to 02 how many electrons are lost or gained by the two oxygen atoms

To identify a redox reaction, we investigate the oxidation states of the individual species involved.

In hydrogen peroxide, the oxidation state of oxygen is:
0 = (+1)(4) + (x)(4)
0 = +4 + 4
0 = 4 + 4x
-4 = 4x
-4/4 = x
-1 = x

therefore the oxidation state of oxygen in hydrogen perioxide is -1, and if we repeat the same process for the oxidation state of oxygen in water, find that its oxidation has changed to -2.
An decrease in oxidation state means that the species was reduced (to get from -1 to -2 it must gain an electron)
If oxygen was reduced, then it is the oxidising agent.

Exactly! It involves using Oxidation Number.
Is this in the syllabus?

I'd assume it would be in the syllabus given the electrochem topic in the production of materials module. It's fairly easy to test and involves the application of a few simple rules in any case, so I can't see why you wouldn't be expected to know it.

The concept is fairly straightforward.
Yes I know it.
Yes we've done it.
But, after we did it, our teacher said it wasn't specifically in the syllabus.
Possibly wrong.

Thanks guys
