just a question, are petrol prices in small towns greater than in large towns cuz the petrol station at the small town is a monopoly ? i cant remember what the lecturer said in class CRAP ! and people dpnt bother going to the large towns to purchase petrol cuz the opportunity cost is too great ?? i hope so :S

all servos are different...between Bathurst and Lithgow the towns prices aren't much different - I think Mt Lambie was possibly cheaper than Bathurst come to think of it.

Though, further out west you go I think it possibly starts gettin more costly. (ie last time I went out to Narromine, it was more expensive there than Dubbo) but from what I remember, the price variance is similar to Sydney..

no i mean do small coutry town petrol stations charge generally more than those in large towns because theyre a monopoly ? ( cuz there might be only one in the whole town ) and do people just pay the higher price rather than going to the town which has cheaper petrol cuz the opportunity cost is too great ie its not worth it ?

From memory, petrol prices, as soon as you leave the city increase. So small country towns, petrol is often more expensive. Probably cause they have to transport the petrol further from refineries.

Some small country towns are no where near a large country town, so sometimes it might be better to pay more than to use all the fuel up in one trip.

I can remember travelling somewhere way out in western nsw, near the boarder and the cost was nearly $2 a litre!!

Edit: Sometimes the country town can only support one petrol station - but is usually like a general store place - where you can literally buy anything. So monopoly increases petrol prices as does the distance from the city.

Effectively yes. But it will vary town to town.

The joys of Microeconomics.

Thank god I am not doing that question - I've decided to do Questions 1 + 4 from the 1st Section and Number 2 from Section 2.

Good luck for the exam on Wednesday ... we'll all need it! :p BTW, what degree exactly are you doing at UWS?
