At every single medical school interview I've been to, I've been told numerous times that appearance does not make a difference whatsoever to your interview performance, and that the interviewers are specifically trained to only judge you on what you say.

However, it is impossible to stop the thoughts rolling in the interviewers' heads. You can't really stop the immediate bias from interviewers if you dress and look like a total ass at an interview. For all the med interviews I've been to, adelaide, unsw, newcastle, monash, griffith and uwa, 99% of them dressed very formally. If a guy suddenly walked in, with baggy jeans, half torn shirts and piercings up their nose and ears and eyebrows, it probably isn't much of a good impression to start with. I'd say go for the 'good' looks for the day. Removing the piercings and such...

I would be wary of a male doctor with long flowing hair coming to tear my heart open. :D

Its just a first impression. No one can discriminate against you on the basis of it, but, the interviewers will recall you as 'oh he was the one with the eyebrow piercing'. (which could be a good thing)

Also, we should keep in mind that the average interviewer will probably be middle aged and conservative. (right?)

How do you know the interviewers are middle aged and conservative? They may have voted for Socialist Alliance last year, there's no way to know, nor should there be.

Alvin had it spot on when he said "show them that you're willing to look like a professional". I had to put on a long shirt and tie today just so I could look like a clinical student (don't ask), and everyone who enters medicine will need to do the same. Better to show them you're comfortable in that atmosphere now.

I absolutely agree with you - I was making a stereotypical statement there about the interviewers. UNCLE had a member of the church as an interviewer one time (I have heard). However, my basic point was about first impressions. In the context of a medical interview, its "better to play safe than to play brinkmanship".

If, later on the interview, you prove yourself wholly capable and professional, then appearance should be no barrier. However, you can't squash societal thinking and the 'vision' they have of a future clinical student.

Is the interview conducted in the medical faculty?

We begin to form opinions of people within 7 seconds (yay for communicology modules  ) so if you're going in there looking all feral, then you have to expect to work that much harder to get the same result if you were to go in there looking neat.

I mean, it doesn't take that much, if you have long hair, make sure you wash it and it is pulled back. Take out any piercings, don't go for the goth look, that sort of stuff.

i grew my hair for like 9 months but i cut it for the interview
not sure if it was a factor but i think the general perception of doctors is that they maintain a traditionally professional appearance...

Yes, almost all medical schools have a combined med option (including some graduate schools with PhD programs) but they're usually only offered to the VERY best candidates.

lol prepare for anything. That is all I can say. I heard that sometimes they can ask really crazy questions that had nothing to do with med (or anything that you would expect them to ask).

rock up, smelling of beer and smoke. Talk in a drunk voice, wear a limp bizkit t-shirt or a t-shirt saying "Fred Drust is my role model" and you might get on the course :)

thats not purely appearance though. If u talk like a drunk person then that is your performance in the interview - not ur appearance

I've had some excellent discussions of philosophy and theology with drunk people.

They just can't remember anything after.
