Explain…Changing times have brought with it the need for possessions, teenagers in general find it hard to function without these things, a phone, ipod and computer are part of everyday life. As time progresses and technology advances, adolecents have the need to have more than before.

As mentioned before, there are more things, constant upgrades and an urge, or greed, to have more things than others.

Looking at the amount of possessions adolecents own, there is no need for any teenager to own 40+ pairs of shoes, 100's of cd's, various gaming consoles at the same time etc. Money is being spent simply because it is there.

I think it is good in one sense that we learn more skills in some ways, and others such as gaming consoles provide more means for social interactions, but bad in the sense that basic values are being thrown out the window. For example no 12 year old child needs an ipod, phone, xbox, playstation and laptop.

Explain - society itself has become a lot more materialistic - a throw-away society where "stuff" is given at christmas and usually thrown away within the next year. In order to "fit in" teenagers would have to have all the latest gadgets, clothes etc, and other stuff.

As previously said, I think society itself has become a lot more materialistic, driven by teenagers who readily believe that they "need" all these things. Also, goods have become cheaper in comparison to wages/pocket money, which allows teenagers in particular to buy a lot more.

I have mixed feelings with this question - in the short term I believe it is probably beneficial as teenagers are able to have everything they need or want, but in the long run I do not think it will be beneficial.
As today's adolescents grow up they will take their materialistic values with them, accumulating more and more stuff, or throwing away perfectly good items just to have the latest thing. This will detrimentally affect the world. If teenagers are taught to not be materialistic, money & items etc can be used for better purposes (ie charities) or at least not be taking up landfill space.

  • NO---- Theres just an inherent thought within themselves that they need it! When we go on school retreats, although not for a long time, we have to cut out all of that stuff, Its so much more refreshing.

Because its more available, even basic activities like going to the beach or having a picnic can have crazy connections with buying new bikinis and stuff.
As more children have credit cards etc, EFTPOS is common, higher childrens wages etc
