I am carrying out this survey to assist me with my Personal Interest Project (PIP), for Society & Culture. My chosen question that I have selected to focus on for this assessment is –: “Is it easy for Polynesian Adolescents to maintain cultural identity in a westernised society?”.
All your information will be strictly used for study purposes and will remain confidential. I only ask that you be truthful in your answers & that your contribution is very much appreciated. Thank you for taking part in this survey. ☺

What is your ethnic origin?
Tonga
What country do you live in?
Australia
Are you a patriotic (love & have pride in your country) person? In what ways?
I am in some ways such as in the cultural side of it but in general no.
What language (s) do you speak at home? How often?
English - always, Tongan - rarely

Do your parents speak English to you? How often?
yes - always

Is your culture implemented in your daily life? If so how many times a day/week?
Only in the foods that we eat and that only happens around 3 times a week.

What cultural rituals do you follow?
The funeral ritual, birthday ritual, wedding ritual.

What cultural rituals have you not followed? Why not?
I don't know any other rituals but the ones above.

Have you ever visited your country of origin? How many times?

No.

How does it differ from the country you live in?

I've never been.

Do you think it’s more difficult for you & and other Pacific Islander adolescents to hold cultural values in today’s society? Why/ Why not?
Yes its more difficult for pacific islander adolescents to hold cultural values in todays society especially a western society as we were brought up in a different country to our parents and grandparents and its very hard for parents to uphold those cultural values in a western society due to the different lifestyles and values that western countries hold.
Is it easy to maintain your cultural values in today’s society? Why/Why not?
As Above.

Do you think you should maintain your cultural values in a westernised society? Why/Why not?
Yes as gives a variety to the population and you have a strong sense of where you are from and where your family is from.

How different, do you think, is the way you acknowledge your culture different to how someone who lives in Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands etc. acknowledges their culture?
Very different. We (people living in westerned societies) acknowledge our culture as our ethnicity whereas people actually living in the islands acknowledge their culture as their life.

Do you believe the way you embrace your culture is different to that of your parents? How?
Yes, my parents are very strong about keepng our culture within the family but because we were brought up in australia with different values about culture, we find it hard to embrace our culture due to the differences the tongan society has compared to the australian society.
