hi all, i'm currently looking for some related texts for my area of study: crossing boundaries. My prescribed text is a novel Five Bells (not the poem). it's relatively new so i doubt anyone will know it but um any suggestions that relate to this topic? more specifically, the novel is a lot about crossing boundaries of the past (there are memories and previous experiences that still haunt some characters in the present and the book is about how these characters succeed/fail in overcoming these challenges). i'm looking for films but novels are ok as well :)

Have you seen Cloud Atlas the film? Extremely relevant to crossing temporal boundaries, common human experiences et c. Also check out the original David Mitchell novel, I haven't read it but his other works (including Ghostwritten which may also suit what you're looking for) are superb. Otherwise, perhaps Letters from Iwo Jima or Gran Torino (both Clint Eastwood films), though they don't deal as explicitly with past and present (each focuses on one but only alludes to the other).

Hope that helps?

thanks so much! i'm looking at these texts right now, the david mitchell works seem ok especially since my prescribed text also has different characters who are interlinked subtle way, might have to study my prescribed text a little more to make an informed decision

No worries. If you want to focus on the interlinking characters, also look at Crash, won a few Oscars including Best Picture some years ago. Doesn't have the across-time element but it does intertwining stories very nicely. If you want cross-temporal, why not Looper? #onlyhalfkidding
