Invictus (Poem)

By William Ernest Henley

Out of the height that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

- is this poem good to use as a related text for discovery
- if so, then what element of discovery can be the most talked about

thanks for your help!!! :)

To be honest, poems aren't very good as an area of study related in the first place. I think you should invest your time in looking at a film or short story because there's more substance than a poem.

Poems as related texts are highly regarded by HSC markers so I would not be advising people to steer clear of them. Poetry can be quite dense and expressive, using a variety of techniques and tones, as well as adding a variety of creative vocabulary to your essays.

PM me for more info about notes on 'Invictus' as a related text :) What is your prescribed text?

DEFINITELY 'Invictus'. It is a highly regarded classic and W.E Henley is a well-respected poet. The Hunger Games is often studied by classes in Year 9 and 10 and is also over-used.

Poems are actually very good for this area of study because they are a lot of poems out there that express the poets life/troubles/problems etc. this is SELF -DISCOVERY. A fantastic poem to use is Margaret Atwood's Journey to the Interior. However it is a pretty hard poem to get into deep analysis so maybe if you can find a tutor or teacher to help you than this is a great poem to use

Poems are an under utilised as a related text, and well worth analysing.

There are lots of suggestions of poems that can be used as related texts for 'discovery' at www.hscdiscovery.com.au :) Not a lot of students use poems as related texts, instead opting for films which can be quite difficult as you need to analyse film techniques as well
