Hi i'm from London and over here our education system is completely different to Aus. I'm starting year 12 and can't go to uni until I have finished A-levels in year 13. What is the education system like in Aus. What year do you leave and what exams do you take?

I have a pr (permanent residency) visa and i'm going to go to an Australian Uni some time in the future. I know nothing about your education system and would be grateful if someone could fill me in.

Thanks
Pommy babe :)

um, basically we don't have a Year 13, the last year of high school is Year 12.

let me give you a quick run of things;

high school begins when you hit Year 7. From then on, up till Yr10, you don't achieve anything. But at the end of Year 10, everyone must sit an exam called the School Certificate. After completing this exam(or SC), that is the end to compulsory education.

However, many people choses to move onto year 11 and year 12. That is, they want to either get the HSC, where HSC stands for Higher School Certificate, or get an UAI, where UAI stands for Universirt Admission Index. UAI is what most people want, because this index is a score where it will lead you to Uni(provided you get the sufficient UAI score)

Year 11 is called the preliminary year. year 12 is called the HSC year. the subjects you took in yr11, will built on to Yr 12. So technically speaking, you are not allowed to take a brand new unit in yr 12. (of course, unless you are taking extension units such as maths, english .....etc)

At the end of year 12, you can sit in an exam called the HSC exam. This is where part of your UAI score is determined. UAI is not a mark on how you fair in the exams, but rather a "rank" as to how you fair compared to other people across the state.

there are technical threads around this site on how UAI is calculated.
for more information, i suggest you to http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/ <- this is the official site of the education department in NSW

On another note, each state of Australia basically has its own state government run education system, there is no national syllabus.

Have a look at this forum: http://community.boredofstudies.org/forumdisplay.php?f=460
Should give you some idea....

There is also a site somewhere that has a table showing the conversion of UK A-Level Marks into the NSW UAI.....(But i have forgotten the site)

I've done Year 7-11 in London and did Year 11-12 here in Australia, so I know about both education systems. You can PM me if you have any specific questions.
