We have a legal assesment in two weeks which is basically a known prepared essay question which we have to write under exam conditions without notes etc and then provide a bibliography and research notes As we all know the question our teacher has told us that he cannot help us with anypart of the question we can ask him questions about some things but nothing specific BUT a girl in the other class who is annoyingly over prepared wrote her essay already and gave it to her teacher to mark and then was given it back with basically full marks and suggestions for slight improvements. I dont think that this is fair that she had it seen and was able to get help when the rest of the 37 legal students didnt have any help. No one in our year knows yet cos i found out in afternoon class but they will when i tell them on monday cos i dont think that we should all suffer in marks cos she had help. Should the teacher have been more careful in spotting that this was the assessment question and should the whole year be given help as a result? OR should her marks be deducted

It would depend more is this was a hsc assessment task or not. Prelim assessments, l wouldn't care.

But still, l know where you are coming from.

In biology recently, my friend Brian needed 75% or more or he wouldn't be able to go to State for his sport. he asked me if l could help him (we are in the same class) l nicely said no way, because l have to do the assessment just the same as him, so why should l help him out when we are competing?

He then asked me if he could hand the assessment in a few days before hand, get the teacher to mark it or look over it, and tell him what he has done wrong, or what he has to fix up. I told him l don't think that the teacher can do that, and sure enough l emailed my teacher and asked if this was possible (not giving names, just a simple senario with a different subject). My teacher said that the only thing he can advise on was to reffer to the marking scheme (marking sheet, which contains the things that should be included and the marks etc.) He could not give out any specific details.

Although he did look at Brians assessment (one of them) and said that he did something wrong, but he didn't tell him how to do it, only that he did it wrong. This was a few days before the assessment was due, so it was ok.

However, l don't think that was fair at all. Its like in English yesterday, we had to do a hsc assessment task in class, which was an essay. We had to memorise everything, no notes, no help nothing. the only thing we could ask for help is better explaination of the question. Lets say if someone brought in their essay, which was done at home - which means that they had access to notes and quotes.

(sorry about my long post)

i dont see why if someone asks for help a teacher shouldn't give it. Unless she had told you, or anyone else in that class, that she woudl not check your work and then looked at her's - i think it is okay.

Thats what teachers are there for - they are meant to be giving adivce and helping us get the best marks that we can.

look, if they are going to help one student they have to be prepared to help all of them, so no she shouldn't have had help unless other people who want help can go and get it too

I meant in general, because giving out questions ahead of time tends to create problems of prepared essays by students. This is especially in the case of good schools where everyone in the class would make prepared essays. It defeats the purpose.

In my last english assessment the question was given beforehand and the smarter ones in the class wrote responces under the guise of a slightly altered question and our teacher marked and gave comments. I was part of that group. :) It was something to be taken advantaged of, I guess... Katie, I honestly think that you should try doing the same thing and see if the teacher marks it as well. If s/he does then that's an added advantage (and u could choose to tell ur friends to do that as well) and if s/he doesn't then u can accuse them of having favourites and cause a nice big scene. :) It's a win-win situation.

Just probably make sure that you write a different question (albeit one that's similar to the assessment one or they'll be no point) and look as though you're writing a responce to that question and not the assessment one.

I call this girl not "annoyingly over prepared" but "smart" :p

Even so, I still don't like the practice of giving out essay questions beforehand and then making students do it under exam conditions.

i agree completely. it isn't an assessment task anymore, its a memory test and that is not what the hsc should be about.

But Katie said that it was supposed to be written under exam conditions, without notes. This girl wrote hers at home, in her own time, with notes.

This isn't right, the other girl could have also gotten help from others.

But also, the whole giving out the essay question should not be allowed. It gives them time to prepare for it and like caitlin said, its more of a memory test than a knowledge test.

everyone has the same opportunity to write it at home and memorise it, then regurgitate it during the assessment.
however, i dont think the teacher should have gave her advice...its should be all or none.

I suppose, but it was supposed to be under exam coniditions without notes. I would not have written it up at home, l would have done the right thing and turned up and done it in class like the teacher said.

The advise thing is a worry.
