Entry to ANU tougher as cut-off scores rise
By Daniel Landon Education Reporter
Thursday, 6 January 2005

The entry score for all bar one Australian National University course will rise this year, with the minimum cut-off climbing five points to 85, a 15-point increase in the past four years.

The required Universities Admissions Index score for ANU undergraduate degrees in science, arts, economics, commerce, Asian studies and information technology will rise to 85.

In 2002 all of these degrees required a score of 70.

The preliminary round of offers for 2005 university study were made yesterday. The ANU and University of Canberra made 850 and 700 offers respectively, most of which were to students in the Canberra region.

The main round of offers is on January 19.

Other ANU increases for 2005 were: Asian studies (specialist) and arts (international relations) both up five points on last year to a required score of 90; actuarial studies up two points to 95; engineering up one point to 85; software engineering up three points to 85; finance up three points to 88; and international business up six points to 88.

Law is the only course to remain unchanged, at 95.

UC is yet to announce its scores. It will wait until it knows the number of acceptances from preliminary round offers before finalising its cut-offs.

UC director of planning and resource development David Hamilton said high demand for some courses - such as architecture, international studies, medical science, science and sports studies - meant cut-off score rises were unavoidable. The extent of the increases was unclear at this stage.

UC had many more applications than positions available in many disciplines, he said. It was disappointing more people would not be able to gain a place in 2005.

The university was trying to keep its minimum score from rising above 75, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to do so.

Although there was a slight decrease in demand from ACT students for university study, the quality of those seeking a place had been maintained or had improved.

UC expects to make between 1500 and 1600 offers of places this year, down from about 3000 last year.

Acting ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Malcolm Gillies said the increase in scores was a concern to the university.

"I understand that the rise in UAI cut- offs for ANU degrees will be disappointing to many who have studied hard and earned good scores," Professor Gillies said.

These students would otherwise have gained entry comfortably in 2003.

"That's a concern to us because it would indicate that those students could still study very well and benefit from being at the ANU."

He did not expect a rapid rise in scores in coming years, and predicted they would stabilise at about current levels.

"I would personally be concerned if [scores increased] too much higher because it starts to restrict access to a lot of very good students both around the nation and particularly here in Canberra."

The increase in scores was caused by several factors including an increase in demand, especially from students outside the Canberra region, the university making fewer offers, and greater promotion of the university.

The ANU would make about 2000 offers this year, about 9 per cent less than last year. Making fewer offers ensured the university would not be too heavily financially penalised by the Federal Government's policy to prevent over- enrolment. Under the Government's higher education legislation, which came into force this year, universities receive lesser funding if they have more than their prescribed quota of students.

Although the university had many highly qualified students it would like to admit, it could not do so because it was already projecting to be over-enrolled, Professor Gillies said.

The ANU expected to be over-enrolled by between 2 and 3 per cent in an attempt to meet the demand for its courses, and would pay a penalty for doing so.

The number of applicants who chose ANU as their first preference rose 4 per cent this year, and total applications increased 1per cent.

This was a very good result given a national trend of declining applications.

The increase in applications was caused by a range of factors including new courses being very popular, especially in business- related areas, the ANU's consistently excellent ranking in global surveys, and its decision not to increase fees.

Students who missed out on the ANU this year could change preferences in time for the main round of offers, study elsewhere then transfer to the ANU, or look to study at the ANU as a graduate.

Students wishing to study in 2005 have until midnight tonight to change their preferences for the main round - visit www.uac.edu.au or phone 1900957500.

ANU staff are available to advise students about preferences and the enrolment process by phoning 1800620032, or visit http:/ /info.anu.edu.au/studyat/.

At least the Law UAI hasn't risen. Which means, most of us are going to get in.

The Law UAI is 95. I think it'll stay there for a long time.

Wow I was very comfortable at 91.30 trying to get into International Relations, now I'm not so comfortable. 5 points that is insane. Lucky I squeezed 90.

Meh, you're still in. Better than my 1.10 margin for law, but I'm still in. Unless they rise, which is highly unlikely.

So there is little chance of the law cut-off changing in the main round?
