Hey
I got my UAI today of 92.95. After a few hours I received a call from a lady at UTS engineering congratulating me on my result and offereing me a preliminary place into BE Engineering for 2008. I was chosen based upon my UAI and a questionaire I filled out a few months ago.

At this moment in time I have engineering at UNSW as my first preference with a UAI of 88 needed (thus I will get an offer in the main rounds). My second preference is engineering at UTS. If I am to accept the offer UTS engineering must be my first preference before 12:00pm on 1st January (this is earlier than the main round cutoffs for changing preferences which is 4th January)

I asked the question
" If I am to alter my preferences and make UTS Engineering my first preference I will be offered a position. When the main rounds come along will I still get an offer frmo UAC"

The lady said
"Yes UAC will offer you your second preference, meaning I will have the preliminary offer from UTS and the main round offer from UNSW"

My first question is if this correct as I thought you could only receive 1 offer?

If I keep my preferences in the current order the prelimianary position wont be given and I will most likely just get an offer for UNSW engineering (1st preference).
The apparent 'advantages" of the preliminary offer is that enrollment is earlier on the 16th January before the main round offers are even given out.

Another question is... If i leave my preferences as they are now and for some reason dont get a UNSW offer will I still get a normal main round offer from UTS?

At this moment in time I am not 100% decided on which university but I will most likely choose UNSW as my first preference. Is there any other advantage to this preliminary offer?

Lol im not a women.

I understand
If I decided to put UTS first I will get the preliminary offer during the prelim round. Does that mean I can also get offered UNSW in the Main round?

Dont call me stubborn... i worked hard got above the UAI for my first two preferences of 92.95 and will get offered a place in either university. Excuse me for not wanting to rush into a decision. I have pros and cons for each university

UNSW - Highest repuation for engineering derpartment and industry recognised, been a few times and know my way around, 4 year course, have until end of first year to decide what area I want to specialise in, travel times are longer since i need to take a bus

UTS - Longer 5 year course, shorter travel times, the 6 month internships are appealing, dont know much about the university,

Well they are both engineering (Civil) so its not like i wanna change my course to one that is closer to my uai. What are the majority of students like at UTS who do engineering, mostly guys I assume. Is it full of asians?

Here is what I have learnt so far after advice from UAC spokesperson

I was told to accept the preliminary offer from UTS and make it my first preference before January 1st. On January 3rd I will receive the offer from UTS. The UAC spokesperson then told me on January 4th 12:00pm the cutoff for course changes happens for the main round thus when I receive my offer on the 3rd of January from UTS I should straight away change my preferences making UNSW 1st again and to just put UTS at the bottom.

Thus when the main round comes along I will get an offer for UNSW. In summary

Preliminary Round Offer = UTS on 3rd January
Main Round Offer = UNSW on 17th January

I should be attending the UTS open day on the 3rd of January to see what its like since I havent been before. I have been to UNSW many times, had a feas interview, met some people so hopefully the UTS one is worthwhile.

A few questions to those who are currently doing the course (civil)

1) Do you find the internships or does the university appoint them to you, because I have family contacts that work with civil engineers in randwick council and construction company mirvac.

2) Socially are you seperated from other courses and only associate with engineering students or are there chances to socialise with students from other courses.

3) How are the lecturues, teacher, tutorers. Are many arrogant or difficult to understand?

ive been offered the preliminary too

i think its pretty much safe to say that yhou're gonna get an ace education at uts, fully preparing you for the workplace, which is ultimately what you want. Really wouldnt worry about that. UTS has impressed me a lot in that aspect.

I also get the impressiont hat UTS is more down to earth, than other, more thological universities.

The only thing that swings me towards other uni's like usyd is the well known name and the prestige factor. We know that its bullshit, but what about future employers, esp internationally? Im sure it wont be much influence since theyre all accredited under the washington accord, but you never know, it might.

Also what entices me towards usyd is the whole uni life thing, with the hundreds of clubs and the hanging out around campus. who knows. But i remember engineering being in a section of the campus in the corner, almost secluded. This is unlike UTS where everyone from all faculties are relatively close to each other. I used to think that UTS would have a crapper social scene than usyd, but now i think otherwise because of this.

All in all, im still pretty confused as to which uni to choose, but im very strongly urged to go to UTS.

I guess im just looking for reassurance that i will have a great social scene at uts (not worry about education now because im 100% its awesome) and that i wont be secluded to engineering students. i wanna get out there and meet new people.

on a side note, i never even concidered unsw, didnt seem to offer any more than the more accessible unis. also seemed to be pretty thoretical.

I also got the preliminary offer at UTS engineering. So does this mean that i have guaranteed a spot at UTS ? Meaning i wont have to worry about getting into university because i already received an early offer.

To accept this offer i have to put the engineering course in preference number 1 before January the 1st correct?

so its like:

Item:1
Course code: 603065
Course description Bachelor of Engineering ICT Eng (Telecommunications), Diploma in Eng Practice - full or part time at University of Technology, Sydney, City campus

I just want to make sure that i do everything correctly because I'm a very paranoid person
