hey there,

im headed into year 11 next year and as the summer holidays are beginning i want to know how i should prepare. is the jump from year 10 to year 11 major? im pretty nervous as i've only got two years left of my high school education. i want to perform to the best of my ability in the hsc and want to get ahead early. how often should i be studying these holidays, in fact what should i even be studying?

the subjects ive selected are: math ext1, math adv, eng adv, chem, physics, geo (i plan to go up to math ext2 in year 12 and drop another subject)

im hoping to become a medical doctor and am hoping for an atar around 95, although ofc i would be happy with higher. i haven't been properly tutored before and plan on getting tutored soon. if anybody knows any good tutors for my subjects, especially chem and math, that would be great.

ive honestly got no idea how year 11 will go, and with saying that year 12. is there a lot of stress? im just looking for advice from some older peers, whether thats study habits or just general advice. i would appreciate any advice and responses.

the jump is pretty drastic but don't worry. it's only by week 3 that things start to speed up. but try not to be intimidated, be confident!!
year 11 is kind of just a trial of the HSC. don't worry if you aren't getting the marks or ranks you want, but just always think "how can i do better?" and implement whatever strategies you think of and see how it works out. its just constant trial and error until you figure out what works best for you.

also, just a heads up, for math it's very important you to have a good grasp on EVERYTHING especially content in ext 1 if you're doing ext 2. literally everything will carry over into year 12 and can be assessed in your HSC
other subjects like chem, not as much carries over

during the holidays, the one thing you should definitely do is read your texts for english and come up with unique and personal ideas about your prescribed text.

maybe try looking at the first topic for ext 1 (for my school it was polynomials)
dont worry about math advanced, if you have solid algebra skills it will be a breeze and you can get full marks with minimal study

also maybe try looking at module 1 for chem and physics? doing the first dot points and familiarising yourself with content is honestly more than enough. i don't know if they use modules in geography but doing something similar might be worth doing too.
but please please take lots of time to rest and enjoy yourself!! there's really no urgent need to do anything, i know lots of people who didn't study at all during the holidays and still did exceptionally well. if you feel like studying will help you ease into the year, then go ahead, but you don't have to.

about stress, just remember these marks aren't that important. of course, care about your assessments and your performance but don't beat yourself up about it.
if you learn how to stay consistent throughout this entire year without wearing yourself out, figure out how to efficiently study, and learn from all of your mistakes, you're already ahead of majority of the state (which will hopefully lead you to a 95+ atar)

along with that im unsure of where to find my ext 1 topics. are the modules for chem and physics found on the textbooks? sorry for all the questions, i just feel as if i should somewhat prep myself for the upcoming year.

ill try to establish a routine these holidays to gauge an idea of what im up for next year.

usually your school should tell you what texts you're doing. maybe in the last week of school you'll be provided with them?

the modules for chemistry and physics are found online through the nesa website.

omg im so sorry i deleted the ext 1 math stuff cos i thought i misread it as you doing ext 1 math even though you do ext english BUT i think you're doing both (silly me )
but the channel was mcgrathematics and you can find the ext 1 year 11 cambridge textbook pdf just by searching it up online

a new syllabus usually means that you'll get easier papers. by that i mean they won't test any niche syllabus dot points.
i think there will be some overlap with the old syllabi, so past papers aren't completely redundant. you just won't be able to do them entirely.

tbh i think they would compensate with easier papers but im unsure.

the broad range of content would probably remain consistent across both syllabus', then again who knows.

we'll have to wait and see lol

if you think any question is too easy in your homework just skip it. i did that for math and chemistry a lot. its a complete waste of time and you're better off doing more challenging questions that push your understanding
hopefully you don't have too much homework for extension english but either way, it's a good thing because it'll get you ahead of a lot of your advanced english peers in terms of analytical skills

Main tip is ur mindset throughout the year cause I stressed out too much for no reason and my performance suffered as a result of it. Try ur best but even if u do bad in year 11 there’s always room for improvement in year 12 so don’t stress out too much. Yes the change is drastic but don stress out cause you’ll be fine. Also in the holidays don’t study too much and maybe just look into the syllabus, read ur English texts and if ur weak in certain math topics then study that

Tbh the maths and english syllabi have not gone under major changes, there is some differences but for the most part, past papers will still be relevant as the main crux of the new maths syllabus especially for advanced and ext 1 is that they have added things and removed other topics. English is pretty much identical to the previous syllabus, mainly just text changes and updated terminology. Don't worry, just make sure you are looking through the syllabus, ensuring that you understand each dot point.

twin u dont necessarily need to jump the gun and start preparing for y11 during ur summer break. the syllabus is designed in a way where u can master the content within the time constraints given to u within the 3 terms. not saying u CANNOT study - but i recommend ... yk .... enjoying ur break! dont stress it gang. ull do well

noo im so sorry for confusing you

originally i had selected: ext/adv eng, ext/adv math, geo, eco, physics

but after my school ran like some sorta taster sessions for each elective, i swapped some around because i found them irrelevant or just did not interest me.

and so i changed to: ext/adv math, adv eng, geo, physics, chem

sorry for the confusion.

and thank you everybody for the advice. i'll definitely use it and enjoy my summer holidays! yet also just to keep my brain in shape, i'll make sure to revise over topics brought over to year 11
