can anyone tell me the trends for the five priority areas? (plus asthma, which was added in 1999 but isn't in the syllabus). Everywhere i look i get different answers. Is this right:
CVD=decreasing since 1960s
Cancer= increasing as a whole for both sexes, male lung cancer down, female lung cancer up, melanoma stable.
Injury= decreased for unintentional, increased for intentional e.g. suicide
Mental Health= increased
Diabetes= increased
Asthma= decreased in past decade

Injury: account for approx 6% of all deaths. Highest death rate occurs in the 15 - 25 age group (71% of all deaths). Overall there has been a significant decline in deaths, with mortality rates now being half of what it was in 1970. Three main causes of death: suicide, transport related, other (poison, drowning etc).

Cancer: one in three men and one in four women will be directly affected by cancer by the age of 75. In AUS each year almost 80,000 new cases are diagnosed. Most common cancers are bowel, lung, prostate, breast, skin.

Asthma: 2 million people in AUS have asthma. In 1998, 685 people died from asthma. Death rate is decreasing but incidence is increasing. 1 in 4 children suffer from asthma symptoms.

Alcohol related problems highest in groups 20-29 and 14-19
Marijuana is the most used illicit drug in Australia
