if you really still want to prevent being dragged by your cohort (which is unlikely if youre smart enough to be at the top of your current school), you can move up to a selective school or high ranking private school (both are pretty much same thing in terms of academic environment, private has access to better resources but they perform similarly). but be warned, since your moving in y11 youll drop significantly in terms of your performance bc everythign in high ranking schools gets harder and more competitive and its unlikely that if you were like 1st in your current school that youll still be ranked up top in a higher ranked school.

also foreign unis actually care more abt extracurriculars and stuff but once you get to a really academically motivated school they have a lot less of an emphasis on extracurriculars in y12 and stuff so that might not be the best fit for you

Not exactly true for the last to parras. Private schools (GPS ones at least) have a significant emphasis on cocurriculars, to the point where they force students undertaking programs. In the case they don't attend before exams (fyi these programs are run after school on mondays), they can be vulnerable to lose %ages out of their hsc exams. Same goes for sport if not attending trainings or saturday sports. There are also much more international application assistance in these schools (mine especially for some reason runs programs specialising specifically on just this and have found heaps of success, getting students into oxford, cambridge, etc). In terms of clubs, heaps are available, and you are given the opportunities to put forth new ones if you have evidence students would be interested. In terms of being bogged down after moving in yr 11, I did not feel much of a huge difference moving from a 140th ranked school to a top 50. This is maybe because I switched from coed to single sex education so take this w a grain of salt.

what are the benefits of being in a private school over public?

network , better access to resources, more academically inclined peers, better teachers and pastoral support and better access to opportunities and facilities. the teaching being better is evident since private schools don't necessarily take in academically gifted students at the start of year 7 but their students end up performing similar or better than those at selective schools and almost always much better than those at normal public schools.

also i dont really see the difference between a normal private school and a public school, you only start getting access to those benefits when you go to an elite private school

mb i agree that private schools have an emphasis on cocurricular but thats not all of them i think, at least the ones in my locality dont care. also they do tend to have better cocurricular opportunities too bc public schools dont invest in that kind of thing generally. but the losing marks from

also yeah id have expected moving to an elite private school would have high success rates of getting into foreign unis and that they would actually push for that stuff bc if you go any sort of selective schools they really push for unis like usyd and unsw instead of foreign unis, so thats smth that didnt cross my mind at all. so yeah thats smth i forgot to mention

i think being bogged down really depends person to person ngl. i wasn't particularly struggling either when i moved from my old school (blacktown girls so to a top 50 fully selective school) but thats bc it was y8 and i went to tuition. but i think a lot of people that move struggle in particularly competitive cohorts when previously anything would have flied in their old school. the standard of work expected from me even in y8 was shockingly higher and i had to put in a lot more work in my new school. again that might be bc im in a selective school but yeah

in hindsight i would say to the op that yeah a private school aligns with your interests better but you could honestly do the same thing in any top 90 school if you work hard

i would do my research and see what kinds of subjects and extracurriculars i would want to do and then apply that way

What is the atmosphere/environment like at private girls schools like Pymble Ladies College, Abbotsleigh, PLC Sydney, SCEGGS, Meriden, Queenwood, Wenona etc? Are private schools really better than public schools (not just in terms of facilities)? Would selective schools be better than private schools?

hi, Im in year 10 and I go to a public school and it is top 90. I am really wanting to get into a top uni that being over seas such as the UK or the US unis. Therefore Im going to be needing the top grades (internal and the ATAR) and as well as the support in extracurricular activities. Would moving to a private school help? if so, what ones are really good? Thanks

hey lmao i js left a selective school thi year, and am now studiyng at a private school but im moving again next yr to a higher selective school. i honestly feel like at private schools the good thing is that when it ocmes to subjects, u can choose whatver, there's rlly not restrictions here, but also keep in mind that u would have to take studies of relgion. if i had to give u a yes or no answer, i would personally say no, dont move to a privwte school. its got nice pepople but spending money on fees for a private school can be used in high quality tutoring

also important note: keep in mind, that no matter what school ur in, at the end of the day every single yr 12 nsw student sits the same hsc paper.

i see thats one of the main reasons i want to consider going to a private school like i currently go to a top 90 public school and so thinking about going to a top 20 (private) would give me a bit of advantage in terms of ec's nd cocurriculars cause when it comes to grades and ranking i feel like that smth I have to put in the work for regardless of the school but ec's could benefit from going to a school that puts emphasis on it and has a wide range of it. My school has like around 4 clubs and that too barely anyone goes too and in terms of sports they do have them but since i moved from overseas in the middle of the year (term 2) i never got a chance to try out for any of them.
