i have no idea...
i don't even know what a soil-releasse finish is
is it the same as soil - resistant?
wat the difference between mechanical and chemical?
i only know the chemical one if it is soil resistant

yeh soil release - they repel soil or prevent it from bonding with the fabric.
mechanical - sprayed onto the surface of the textile and is not durable e.g. scotchgaurding
chemical - bonded to the fibre chemically, they are permanent

The syllabus only gives fire redardant finishes and soil-resistant finishes as an example of something to learn - they don't specify that you must be taught them, and I wouldn't expect them to ask on a specific finish, after all, there are hundreds.

I'm learning a few, but again, I really don't think they'd specify that much. They could ask you to talk about a finish for a specific purpose, but you would provide the finish AND the purpose.

Just remember, you can class finishes into three categories:
1. enhanced appearance and handle
2. improved dimensional stability
3. protection from environmental conditions

Have one or two from each and you'll be good as gold :D

Mmm... check your notes, cause Scotchguard is a fluorochemical finish, and is very durable in protecting fabrics against stains...

soil-retardants? Hmm...

*sigh* I hate finishes... I'm so sick of all this theory... :'(

actually if they specify it in the syllabus
they can ask a specific question on it
for example they had appilque on year
but if it wasn't in there they would ask a general question
they are examples but by them being written there
we are expected to know that one specifically
along with others but they can directly ask about that one only

Points pulled out of the syllabus:
- methods of fabric decoration, including printing, dyeing, applique and embroidery
- finishing techniques to enhance fabric performance, including soil-resistant finishes and finishing techniques for a special purpose, such as fire retardant finishes

So I guess we have to know soil-resistant finishes (and could be asked to talk about them), but we don't need to know fire retardant finishes specifically, as long as we know finishing techniques for special purposes... OK, thanks for that, will brush up on my soil-resistant stuff
