Well i got 17/20, 14/15 for around 2 page essays in the trials
thats generally the amount i write, i write about medium size i reckon
Some peple write like 8 pages
In conclusion it depends on your ratio of crapping-on to actual info that contributes to fulfilling the dot points, the size of your writing, and the speed at which you write
I dont think anyone can give a definitive answer given such variables...

The exemplar band six responses were a bit lacking quality-wise. I don't really think they're that good at all. In an essay about King Lear, the person spelt Lear as Leer and referred to Cordelia as Cord... not what I would expect from a band six response.
There were seven pages in total, which makes me wonder whether or not the markers were sober whilst marking them.

it's not hard to write over 4 pages in the HSC. as i keep saying, HSC PAPER IS 10MM LINED! (at least I'm pretty sure it is...)

you will write more because there is not as much space on each page.
you also write single sided (but most of you should be used to that).

and space your words out. some people write an average of four words per line. i think i wrote six.

yep... only 20 line per hsc page.. i do my practice essays on em...

one of my teachers say that to fulfill the 'extensive ability to compose a sustained response' style criteria, u need to write around 8+ BOS pages *at least*

if u miss that criteria then u don't get a band six

if u look at how long the essays in the standards package are, you see them gradually getting bigger and bigger as the marks go up.. cause for a teacher marking 1000000 essays, the amount of pages is the first thing they notice when they're differentiating essays

yeh - and dont write as small as you would normally - ive been practicing writing about 1.5 times normal size so that i can read it easier and so pages fill up more... basically if u can write 3 pages normal paper you should get 6-8 out in HSC booklets

a normal A4 page has about 27 lines
and u should be writing 4 of them
so i say 7 pages min

as much as it's quality not quantity, if u write more, they automatically have a better impression of you (that's what i think) plus, you can't do the questions justice in less pages

I might just add that scribbling takes up a considerable amount of space.. or maybe it's just my typical exams. :p

lol..

i wouldn't worry if i were any of you.. cause today i practiced on the board of studies paper for 2 hours and got 37 pages.. it's sooo spaced. and i normally write about what u guys do on a4

especially if u get a question which asks you to do a radio transcript- you can put in a strategic indent that takes up a lot of space :p

it's definitely quality, not quantity.. i've seen ppl write 8-pg a4 essays and not get into top band.

yeah its all about quality. The new 2003 syllabus does not want essays that blabber on about something that can be explained in a few paragraphs.

For my final exam I wrote only 3 A4 pages and i received 19/20

I generally write around 4-5 A4 pages... I always finish with no time to spare at all.. usually scribble in the final conclusion.. and i mean scribble.

btw, how many pages are in each of these HSC booklets?

my teacher whos been HSC marking for years said theres a psychological factor regarding the marker if you get into a second booklet, the whole "this kid knows what theyre talking about." (relevance is of course a key) Also writing should be kinda big, like 5-6 words per line.
"remember guys these markers have been teaching for a whole day and then they have to come to a marking centre and mark til 9 at night, help them out" - who can argue with that logic?
write like a demon and you'll be fine
