Explain how health promotion, based on the Ottawa Charter reflects social justice principles (5 marks)

Health promotion involves empowering individuals to take control of their own health. This is usually achieved through a multi-faceted approach by an array of sectors and the five principles of the Ottawa Charter to increase the health status of our population. In association with the social justice principles (equity, diversity and supportive environments) this can be seen in the ‘close the gap’ initiative which aims to half the life expectancy between Non-ATSI and ATSI groups within a generation.
Strengthening Community Action: Strategies involving community groups are highly effective in developing critical thinking skills associated with health. This is shown in the ‘close the gap’ initiative through the introduction of ‘ABstudy’ which allows indigenous students to strive for equivalent attainments in school with non-indigenous students. This promotes the social justice principles: Equity – Participation groups, Diversity – Involvement of ATSI, SE – creating supportive environment for ATSI groups… (Then use this layout with the other 4 areas?)
