Can we take calculators into the exam? It's gonna be hard to work out file sizes if we can't (I'm feeling rather important- I FINALLY get them! Better late than never, I suppose)

Meh...
U dont need a calculator. Not that difficult in working out file size.

Eg: Calculate the file size of a graphic with resolution of 1600 by 1200 & 1024 colours each with 64 tones. (Answer in Kb)

This "^" means to the power off
1024*64 = 65536 available colours= 2^16 (thats 16 bits per pixel)

In the exam it would be difficult to calculate 2 to the power of what will give u 65536.
Instead jus do ur multiplication 1024*64 = 65536

Then indicate that
65536=2^x (where x is the number of bits per pixel)

Using log rules..."x" the number of bits per pixel
x=(In 65536)/(In 2)

:. File Size= (1600*1200*x)/(8*1024)

Normally these type of questions are worth 2 marks. They will most prolly give something simpler.

as stated in the examination mateials from the board of studies, in the timetable released, there are no calculators allowed for the IPT exam

which can only mean that there will not be any calculations in the exam
if there are it will not be difficult, ie, require you to do a heap of multiplication to work out solutions

Ta.

I know I should be able to do all the calculations without a calculator, but I've just become so dependant on it that it takes me forever to work out simple multiplication without it!
