Hi everyone i just have a few questions on the process where your worse performing unita are removed after the hsc (assuming you have >10 units)
1. Is this done by nesa or uac
2. Can you choose which unit will be removed (e.g performance in subject X > performance in subject Y but subject Y is a prerequisite for a course)
3. Is your worse performing subject’s performance decided through raw hsc mark or scaled mark

Prerequisites are for the subject itself not it counting to your atar

1. NESA is in charge of determining students' marks, including Assessment Marks, Examination Marks and HSC marks that students receive after they complete their HSC, as well as raw HSC marks, which are the marks that are then used by UAC to produce scaled HSC marks to be subsequently used in the calculation of students' ATARs. Students are not made aware of those marks. Because ATAR calculation is a process that is handled by UAC, they are the ones who determine students' best-performing 10 units to be used in the calculation of their ATARs

2. As bugra mentioned, whether a subject is treated as a prerequisite for a university degree is not dependent on whether it ends up counting towards a student's ATAR. Universities only consider the fact that a student took and completed a particular subject(s). In some cases, they also consider whether a particular standard of performance has been achieved (for instance, a minimum of band 4 in Mathematics Advanced at USyd)

3. Because the purpose of determining students' best-performing 10 units is to use those in the calculation of students' ATARs, the scaled HSC marks are used. Consider the following example from UAC:

Course	HSC mark	Scaled mark
Ancient History	89	77
Biology	88	78
Business Studies	89	77.4
Society and Culture	91	76.2
Physics	91	84.6
English Standard	80	62.4

In such a case, despite the fact that the HSC mark for Society and Culture is quite high, it will not be included in the ATAR calculation given its lower scaled mark compared to the rest of the subjects (excluding English Standard, which would always count regardless).

Why did they all scale down that much

UAC states the following in that regard:

"Because of the different procedures used to calculate NESA HSC marks and the scaled marks, scaled marks are generally lower than NESA HSC marks, except near the top."

Ultimately, what matters for students is that the HSC marks shown in the example would still result in a high (likely 90+) ATAR.

Ah ok, so marks that hit 90+ or 95+ are generally unaffected by scaling, right?

Pretty much, the higher the marks, the less significant the effect of scaling becomes.
