What do we know happened exactly? Some international students were bashed. Horrible yes but do we know whether it was done by actual students of the university? Non students are around campus all the time going to and from the train station not to mention coming to events. The only problem i have with the international students is they play king of the table in the tanner bar and their rules are pretty harsh to get a game but other than that they work hard in any groupwork and are generally pretty friendly in my experience. I have seen the posters that are talked about but they dont last long either security take them down or other students do. Necastle uni has had such a bad rap lately that its really starting to annoy me because we are a toprate uni that gets little respect from UNSW, USYD etc who think they are so much better which is a load of crap! Most of our programs are as good as theirs especially in technical subjects and our students are of much the same standard. I wonder what their plagarism policies are? I hazard a guess that now we are more strict than most unis in the country. A couple of my experiences:
- having to sign that my work done in a laboratory under supervision is my own work!
- an entire group signing that an assignment is their own work when in fact only one person did any work on the project, or one person stealing part of a project without the groups knowledge resulting in a fail for the rest of the group.
- my favourite, academics passing off students work as their own. No names but a comp sci post grad had his thesis stolen by a current academic and passed off as his own at a conference, the academic now holds patent cough cough
- of course lecturers using other lecturers material
All this rubbish has been caused by small groups, the racist stuff i hope is confined to a small % of the campus population, and the plagarism a group in one course of one program in one faculty and now suddenly our university has become a joke? Our university community consists of over 20000 people, students academics and lecturers. You try and find a group of 20000 without any 'bad apples'. ahh that'll do coz i know im preachin to the choir so to speak but to some up...
