how is your final HSC rank affected if you rank first in a subject internally?

If you rank first in your school assessment but rank lower in the external HSC mark, what will happen?

You will receive your external mark as is.
Your internal mark will be the mark of the person who got 1st in the externals.

Both averaged = HSC mark

if you're first in the hsc exam (and rank 1 at school), obviously the hsc=moderated assessment mark

say you're second in the actual hsc (but ranked 1 at school), you just get that mark as your hsc mark, but your moderated assessment will be the highest mark scored in the exam, because you were first at school

1. You sit assessment tasks at school and gain a final mark which is sent into the BOS.
2. This mark determines your internal rank and the gap between the ranks.
3. You sit the HSC exam.
4. You always keep your own exam mark.
5. They take the exam marks from your cohort and give the top mark to the top ranked internal student and the bottom mark to the bottom internal ranked student.
6. The students in between get a mark that reflects their rank AND the relative gaps between the students.

You have to be careful, the "HSC Mark" is your final mark which includes both your external + assessment marks.

I know you meant the external mark, but i just wanted to make it clearer for others.

So will your internal mark have the exact same gap between the guy ranked in front and behind you (in school assessments). In my school assessments lets say I got a mark which was 80 and the guy ahead of me got 85. Will my internal mark be moderated to always be 5 behind him.

Not necessarily. That 5 mark separation is relative to a range of say 40 marks (whatever the range is for your school marks). But in the exams, let's say your range is 15 marks. So that 5 out of 40 marks is sort of compressed into a number relative to 15 marks. It obviously won't be 5, but it might be closer to 2 marks. BOS also needs to consider the average mark of the cohort - they moderate the school marks so the average assessment mark is the same as the average exam mark.

I must admit though... I know alot of students who instead of studying, constantly worry about the method BOS moderates marks etc.
and eventually end up predicting 30+ scenarios of marks, satisfying themselves and then don't even study at all.
