Does the ranking of your school play a role in your HSC?

(Sorry if this is in the wrong section)

nope, the ranking of your school doesn't matter because the academic strength of one cohort can be entirely different to another

It may not matter per say, though in terms of the final HSC exam mark for many subjects your mark is differentiated based on how well your school did phasing in your school rank mark and HSC mark. An example of this is say you get 92 ranking you in the top percentage of your school as your school mark and then get a measly 67 during the HSC while your school averages a mark of 85, it is likely your mark will be moved much higher. However let us take into account these same marks above, though your school averages in the HSC say a mark of 65, then the circumstances here I'd say are self explanatory :)

Uhh, what?

Yes, in the end, unless you obtain the exact same rank in your internal exams(school assessments) and your external exams(hsc exams), your school will DEFINITELY affect your marks. Generally speaking, the better your school does, the better you will do. The worse your school does, the worse you will do.

No, ranking of your school DOES NOT affect your result.

It is the performance of the general candidature of a particular course that can have some impact upon you.

it's still better to go to a consistently high-ranked school though =D

No, it's not the ranking of the school. well, at least i hope not..

i always had this weird notion that it depends what kind of papers the school used for its trials... i mean, that if a school had really really hard trial papers and a student got a mark in the low 80s and in a another school the papers were not as hard, and the student got a mark in the high 90s, then the student from the 1st school will have a better mark overall. but that's just my weird logic. it's probably not even true. :S

but anyway, it would be really unfair if the ranking of the school affected our UAI because it isn't even based on our results, it would be based on last years results. wouldn't it be crappy if our UAI was lower because of previous students in the school?

The scenario you have with regard to the trials is exactly why the school based assessments are moderated to the external exam - the only paper where all students sit the same paper and are marked to the same standard.

The second point - about using last year's ranking to determine this year's result is also correct.

The rankings that were posted for 2007 were the ranks earnt by the cohorts of 2007 and will have no bearing on the 2008 results. After you have your results the schools will be re-ranked based on this year's cohort's results and some schools will make big moves up or down and others will stay much the same.

But aren't the assesment marks given out in the FINAL result , the same as the total marks acheived in the HSC exam by your cohort??
Surely this affects your result? If you are at a consistently high ranked school your LOW ranking could still go ahead of a high student at a very low ranked school?
Think I would rather be 2nd last at James Ruse in physics than 2nd top in some other schools! Please clarify this...the student at a top school will probably end up with a higher assesment mark???????:cold:

Remember that the range of assessment marks are tagged to the range of the exam marks earned.

If James Ruse earns a range of exam marks of 75 - 100 then their assessment marks are moderated to that range of marks.

If a school ranked 600 has a range of exam marks of 25 - 85 then that is the range of the assessment marks of that school.

In that case the 2nd ranked student at the 600 ranked school will probably do better than the last placed at Ruse (depending on how much the gap is between 1st and 2nd at the 600th ranked school - certainly the top ranked student at the 600th ranked school will do better than the student at Ruse).

The ranking of the school is done AFTER the exams are marked and the moderation of the assessment marks are determined. The rank of the school therefore doesn't impact on the results but the other way round.

The range of marks is important..but isn't the total number of marks imortant too??
A scenario...
Smart school..with 100 students
Exam marks range from 99 to 75...Total marks 8;500

Less smart school ...with 100 students
Exam marks range from 90 to 40...Total marks 6;000

Thats an extra 25 marks on average per student to be distributed...1st and last immune..BUT even with gaps, rankings and everything else..SURELY those marks will be spread across the cohort!!
THIS IS MY ONLY HOPE!!!The total assesment marks given out equal the total exam marks...right???It's just the distribution of those marks wich are affected by your ranking in the grade?

Just back on topic..in this case a schools 2007 ranking is just an idea of how well your school will be "treated" in the assesment sliding procedure!!

Yes total marks are the same from externals to internals and so the first group will have higher marks but that is also reflected in the range of marks.

However, after first and last then the gaps become really important to determine the assessment marks.

e.g. at both schools say there was only one mark between 1st and 2nd at the internals then there will still only be 1 mark difference. However the first school has a greater chance of ties which leads to averaging of marks (not the actual exam marks by the way as only first and last exam marks are locked). If the gap was about 10 then the first school will condense that gap more than the second school due to the smaller range of marks available.

The 2007 rankings may give an idea but schools outside about the top 50 - 100 can move a great deal e.g. my school dropped nearly 300 places last year (and yet our number of students with UAIs over 90 was about the same as the year before - we had a lot more students with Band 5s rather than Band 6s then the previous year so the UAIs were fractionally lower but our ranking dropped by that large number of places). We expect the rank to rise somewhat this year.

Thanks cem.
My school is top 50 and always 30-50 so hope this doesn't change!!

gaps will be BIG between the top few and me...how big can the gap be when you have 150 students between 99 and 70????
I was ranked near the bottom in Adv English and Maths but above half in Bio,PDHPE ,Cafs and Food tech.
Thinking 80's for all Exam marks...could my assesment marks be like 50?????in Maths and English on the report sheet??

There is no limit to how big, or small, the gaps can be.

With 150 students there will be a number of ties, particularly with only a 29 mark range, but there still could be a 10 mark gap e.g. if first was considerably stronger than 2nd they might easily have been sent in with say 95 and 2nd with 85. In which case the gap will be maintained in a relative sense. If the whole range was about 30 marks then the 10 mark gap would hold up but if the overall range was 50 then the gap at the top will condense as the range has condensed to 29. (I hope that makes sense).

Your assessment marks are not likely to be in the 50s (as that would indicate a really poor cohort considering the alignment process) but I don't know the quality of your cohort or your own ability so I really can't answer that question.
