i.e. positron annihilates an electron

mesons are not necessarily made up of quark/antiquark pairs

e.g. pion, which is an anti up quark and a down quark, net charge -1

They decide to get along in mesons, I suppose.

And I think mesons are any hadrons with an even number of quarks/antiquarks. Usually 2.

How can they exist?
by definition they are a quark and an antiquark but i thought that antimatter cannot coexist with matter

They do annihilate. They have a mean life of 2.6×10−8 seconds so they do exist for a brief period of time so therefore exist in a combination of down and anti-up etc.
