You can say or think what you like. But I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing goes on at uSyd / UNSW that went on at the University of Newcastle. I remember that ICAC investigation.

Ask a few lecturers at these sandstone universities and they'll tell you that they're told to go "soft" on International Students, because they're worth a lot of money.

Another good thing to watch: Degree Factories: http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2005/s1399343.htm

It isn't just about Asians. I would say the same thing if they came from South America, Europe, Africa or even North America (Quebec anyone?). If you don't know English (written and spoken), you should not be allowed to enrol.

I had a Dutch person in one of my tutorials last year, and she spoke English as if it were her native tongue. I had no problem with that.

This is the reality check of both these institutions.
Yeh, in my tutes i have 3 fobs, it pisses me off so much esp when they talk loudly in their own lang all the time to their friends in class. Some of them can't even answer their own names. I'm just suprised at how they've managed to stay in uni(prob coz they pay others to do their work). Also all the classes in the learning centre at usyd are full of fobs who can hardly speak english.

I also thought that all int students from a non-english speaking background had to sit a minimum english proficiency test CULT, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. Also alot of Australian esl students are fobs from my exp.

What's up with all this fob talk? I enrolled the other day and it was 95% aussie/white/causcasians(sorry I don't know which term is the most correct to use) enrolling. I'm an Australian-born Chinese and went to a high school with lots of asians, so I kinda feel out of place...

I have a friend who's going to the campus at Lidcombe and she feels the same, and wished she had gone to UNSW...

Well, to be honest, I avoided applying to UNSW because of the large amounts of international students. I don't want to work with people who, whilst studying in Australia, are unable to speak its national language. It's sort of silly don't you think?

It's all well and good if you can, but if you can't, then your attempting at studying in an Australian university not only renders useless but you become a burden to other students.

My enrolment was a breeze by the way. The education department was very efficient in comparison to the long lines for the art students.

Mmmm, the staff at the education desk are really nice and helpful too. The lady that does the undergraduate combined help desk, I think her name's Robyn Longhurst, is one of the nicer uni staff members I've met.

Where mainly talkin about a minority at Usyd, but yeh theres alot more fobs at UNSW but still not the majority and i wouldnt say minority either. I'm an ABC and went to high school with non-asians, and yeh i've always been the only asian everywhere i go and everything i do, except at UNSW(I can't even speak a bloody word of chinese or whatever). UNSW really scares me.

You don 't have to stay with your ethnic group just to feel comfortable(it's not like your friend is gonna get disowned by her parents buy getting a white bf or smthin at Cumberland, jks), it's prob about time your friend got out of her comfort zone and socialise with the 90%+ or so caucasian majority.

It's not that we don't have any non-asian friends, but we're just not used to being in such a different environment. There's nothing we can do about it anyway, we'll just have to do exactly that, 'socialise with the 90%+ or so caucasian majority.' :)

That, is great news for newbies like me.
:)

The students helping out during enrolment were great too actually.

Hear hear. I'm a Canadian asian starting at Sydney this year.

I grew up in an asian dominated high school in Canada. Annoying as hell.
Guess I'm just not a fan of loud, effeminate, hello kitty asian culture.

Getting out of that environment was one of the best things I've ever done. Three years at Uni in Canada was a breath of fresh air

Yeh mate, i know how it feels i spent my last two years of high school comming from an all white background into a selective school that was 70% asian and i was always the odd one out because i was the only non-stereotypical asian in the grade of 170 students. I got bagged out by the asians for failing maths and doing eng ext and yeh having all white friends. It really pissed me off when those anime/psp addicted asian kids said i had dissed my background, but yeh it's a bit hard when i was raised up in all white suburbia, while those asian kids stayed in their predominately asian ghettos in the city.

Oh yeh, what graduate degree are you gonna do? Oh, yeh you'll be in contact with fobs and that at usyd, and some whities wont like ya coz your asian even though yeh dont likem.

This ain't high school anymore, your almost out into the real world, so yeh get used to it.
Yeh, nice to here that your prepared, unlike some fobs and int students who only stick with asains and diss whites.

I'm not doing grad. I hated my degree (Kinesiology) and the weather at UBC in Canada so I transfered into BSc at Sydney. I should be done in 2 years hopefully. Plan to double major in advanced physiology and anatomy & histology.
