A window frame consists of 6 equal rectangles.
Only 12 m of frame is available for it's construction.
Find it's maximum area and hence, the dimensions of the frame for which the area of the window is a max.

I presume the '12 m of frame available for construction' is the material required for the perimeter of the window frame, but I cannot come up with a correct equation suitable to equate to 12m (eg. 9l + 8w =12) [which is wrong]

You're in the right track. The question says that the entire frame has the height h, and width y. like this: window.JPG. So doing what u basically did, you'll get 3h+4y=12. Making y the subject, you get 1/4(12-3h).
