Well the time for draft reflection statements has rolled around, and I was looking at the showcases for previous years. the statements scared me - they had all researched crap like narrative theory and postmodernism and sounded fully pro (and a lil wankerish to be 100% honest). My reflection statement is kinda casual, funny, and engaging. What has everyone else got?

if wankerish or pretentious is what gets the marks... i dont see why people have a problem with it. no one else has to read it if you dont want them to... unless you get into showcase of course!

If you want an example (IMO) of what an RS should be, read Llyrai's Reflection Statement in the 04 forum showcase. It is practically perfect as far as reflections go - it has basically only one fault; that it does not create strong enough links to ee1/adv eng.

Also, while casual and engaging may be interesting...being funny by trying to joke is a bit of a waste of space. Especially since you want to cram your RS full of things that give your MW meaning, using that space on jokes would, if I were a marker, indicate to me that there wasn't enough meaning to talk about and you were just trying to meet the wordcount.

I like my reflection statement :) It's probably the one part of my EE2 work that I can look back on and not cringe :)

I remember wanting mine to be along the "casual, funny but engaging" lines and my earlier drafts DEFINATELY fit into this sort of frame. But when the time came around to actually cram everything I had to cram in there (book titles tend to take up a lot of space, as do JUSTIFICATIONS which you must not forget), this changed to "I want it so tight you couldn't jam a toothpick in there!". There's quite a lot of information you have to stuff into a relatively small RS... it's basically your Viva Voce and Report crammed into one.

Yeah, tell me about it. there's so much i have to put in there :S i hate the links to adv eng and ext 1 eng. i did them last year so it's a lil late to extend my english knowledge now... *sigh* The problem is yeah i did heaps of research and stuff but i didnt do it on really high level shit like narrative theory or postmodernism, so my RS doesnt sound as sophisticated. this makes me sad.

I was wondering...does anyone have a link to a guide or something to writing the RS? Because I need someone to point out exactly the things i need to say...otherwisse I'll just go on about my characters and the plot and I dont want to just...you know...ramble.

Please PM me if you have ANYTHING that would help. Thanks so much!!!

like with the viva and report, in the reflection statement u can lie and bs as much as u want! "I gained further understanding of bla bla bla, something that I hadn't previously appreciated"... Just put yourselves into the shoes of the English teachers who are going to be marking it - they want to know what you've got out of doing your major work.
Mine contains lots of stuff about further appreciation of radio as a medium, insights into post-modernistic examinations on the downfall of radio, etc... when all I really did was write a comedy for radio lol

In my reflection statement I'm probably a bit between both styles.

Seen as though you have to explain all the research etc that was donen I incorporated this into the reflection statement... and luckily I went overboard at this early stage and researched like crazy.

I tried to make my statement more engaging and continued the sustained use of playful language in my critical response just so it stands out to the audience (or marker really).

It's hard to do that though, because you need to keep the right balance between demonstrating your process and ability to reflect upon that process with the engagement of the audience
But if it works out then it should be a good reflection statement. That's my hope anyway :p
