Hey, we're doing relationships.
=) Anyone know of any good texts I can analyse? We did the Great Gatsby in class and we need to find 2 more.

Help would be great!

Hmm...I suppose I could do anything since all books have relationships in them. I think what I'm looking for is something that really explores the relationships and something I can write a nice meaty analysis about.

Use Emma or Pride and Prejudice, i am sure you can cram in about 10 page worth on any one of them.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - it explores the main character's exclusion from the family after he wakes one morning as a man-sized bug.

There are probably hundreds of films that use relationships in their plot. Just search IMDB :)

The Great Gatsby isn't a very interesting book at all, it's hard to get into.. but I guess it is pretty short so that makes up for it.

If I'd read the whole book, I could tell you the answer to that.

=)

Cliffs Notes for the win.

You guys get to do the Great Gatsby? Lucky.

The Great Gatsby is an awesome novels- there's a lot to it, and i agree with Tulipa, it's really fascinating. I found the ending quite devastating though- a bit of dream shattering there which i felt rather depressing.

Just don't watch the film. The film was crap.

Absolutely.

The rest of you are illiterate idiots who don't understand the absolute beauty of a modernist novel. Especially the Great Gatsby.

LottoX you ever read anything else by Fitzgerald or are you just quick to criticise because you had to study it in schol?

It requires too much insight into the times for me. I prefer books that can reveal something about humanity or philosophy that I've never thought about, and will leave a mark in my mind. I don't really think "The Great Gatsby" does that as well as some other books.

I remember a party scene where Fitzgerald over-does the use of saturated language to the point that it's beyond obvious. This again happens with the clothes scene (Both of which I only sketchily remember, and both of which I thought were rather obvious and blunt). But hey, I'm a poetry lover, I prefer the subtle.
*raises eyebrow* You saw nothing about humanity or philosophy in that book?

*exhales slowly* Read it again kiddo.

If you're too lazy to read into things then you're never going to appreciate the greats. Transparency is something for commercial success. Things that actually say something are have many hidden layers that take a lot to find.

EDIT: You're a poet and you hate Fitzgerald?? That's fucking bizarre. Most of the poets I know love him for exactly what you despise, that over saturation of imagery and language. It's almost too poetic in parts. I find that a lot of his motifs and scenes have a lot of disconnection that stems from more poetry than prose. But hey maybe that's just me.

Seriously, I just extremely dislike this book.
If you ever do modernism I think you'll see it in a different light. Until then I don't think you can really fully get it if you're not willing to.

But eh.

Can I ask who your favourite poets are?

Are you saying Gatsby left now insight into humanity?

omg... i cannot believe it.

seriously, did you read sparknotes summaries or did you read the book? If the book revealed nothing to you, i suggest you read it again.

You see, after reading Cliff's notes, I find going back and reading the book much more exciting because I actually KNOW what the book's about. It's a bit hard for me to start getting into a book without knowing the basic plot.
