im a bit confused here, in simple terms what is the the theory of special relativity and why can't it coexist with the ether?

The theory of relativity is basically that the speed of light is a constant, while time, mass and length are all dependant on the persons frame of refrence.

It can co-exist with the aether but with the theory of special relativity the aether isn't required, which simplified things a whole lot instead of having to worry about the Earth carrying the aether with it etc.

Is it that within a certain frame of reference, be it an inertial frame of reference, no experiment can be peformed which would indicate that you are moving? And that because of this, the aether could not exist, otherwise a common train model, where the speed of light would be measured to be less if it was travelling against the aether, and if it were travelling with the aether, the speed would be increased, hence you could tell that you are moving and thus, the two theories cannot coexist.
