Yeah, if they had to make it compulsory, they should make English like other units--count in your best ten. People reckon (being asian) that they didn't make maths compulsory in the new HSC just so that the aussies would be advantaged. I mean, all the aussies in my school who take more units of maths than english usually are worse than the asians in maths but better at us than english (by a long way) without trying...grrr....
However, I'd still have kept English if it wasn't compulsory, simply because it does have benefits hidden within all that nonsense about texts and blah...you do learn to communicate better in writing, speaking (damn those oral assessments!), and you learn to analyse and structure your ideas better. But yes, a more vocationally, life-based course in English would be good, so learning how to write resumes, etc...that would be nice...
