'Evaluate the impact of Lenin's death in 1924 on party leadership and the debate over modernisation within the Bolshevik Party'

I know I have to discuss the power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin as an impact of Lenin's death but I don't know how to answer the second part of the question (debate over modernisation).

How would you approach this question?

Thanks in advance.

Juni, is this you? Haha :D

I'm with you there, the second section is difficult to relate back to Lenin's death!

How about through the death of Lenin came the increased prominence of Stalin's position of General Secretary? You can talk about how through such a postition he was able to slowly change the party base from a small yet tight group of intelligentsia to a massive group of people who were, well, not as smart. Hence party 'modernisation' through the advent of Stalin's 'yes men'.
