they dont have to be "sad" according to their lyrics or whatever, i guess if they just give you a sad feeling?

Quite sad. In terms of lyrical content, 'Paper Cuts' and 'Polly' are rather depressing songs. Paper Cuts is based upon a family who kept their children locked in a single room, whilst Polly is based upon a 1987 rape. :(
