Hi all, I am in a bit of a dilemma here. My school is currently preparing for a new captain & vice captain election and all applicants have to submit their form next Monday. From past observations, school leadership roles like captaincy and SRC have always been a popularity contests. It's always people who play sport, or hang out at the skatepark on weekends and generally socialise on a regular basis that get voted as captains. I am not one of those people, and it seems that candidates who actually want to serve the school community and make a change never get voted in. Do you guys reckon i should apply for the election or not bother?

it wouldn't hurt to try?

maybe this year your grade will think differently, and its not like you would loose anything from putting in a form.
What you want to be asking yourself, is can I be captain?
It could add up to 10 points onto your ATAR (if you go to unsw lol) so thats good :)
But also its a lot of time, effort, speeches, public gatherings with important people...well at my school thats what it is anyway. they have morning teas with the principal every friday.
If you think you got it, and really want to serve the school community and make a postivie change, then it wouldn't hurt you to put in a form, there's nothing to lose if you don't get it i think!

good luck if you do it! :D

Yes definitely!!! Even if you don't think you'll get it, a slim chance is better than no chance right? I applied last year as well with your kind of mindset thinking I would definitely not get it but in the end I was like fk it, why not. And I ended up getting vice cap :) There are lots of responsibilities involved but imo that's what makes the position so fun and rewarding. So yeah definitely go for it, best of luck!

Thanks again for everyone's support, results were announced today and I am one of the two school captains for 2015 :) It was a really great experience getting up there on stage in front of 700 students and more than 40 staff. I think my speech must have reached many people, although the jokes I cracked probably helped a bit too  Overall, I feel privileged with the opportunity that has been granted to me and I will do my best to fulfil the responsibilities expected. Only minor issue was that a girl who got vice captains was spreading rumours that the teachers rigged the election. I think she might just be a bit upset, so I understand... Nonetheless, much obliged to everyone!
