For non-mainstream media reportage, I find;

Common Dreams

to be quite good..While it's slanted to the left-wing (I'm to the Left politically anyway, but to those who aren't.. It may seem somewhat biased) What I like is that it reports news besides the numerous 'editorials', so that you can choose either, depending on your ideological viewpoint.

ABC site - yeah - they do tend to have a lrg variety of news stories - quite good too and worth the read most of the time.
