I've been using Skrzynecki's poems as a related text all year since my teacher told me people used it in journeys and were fine. But in the trials I was told it would be very risky using it in the HSC...

any thoughts?

Not only is it risky, it's suicide.
The problem is that all of Skrzynecki's poems come from his one book, Immigrant Chronicle, which is a prescribed text for Belonging. Even if you are doing poems not set for study, (or even worse the ones that are) you'd still be using the same text, which is a big no-no.

It's not like a text that 1% of the state does anyway, I believe the majority of the schools choose Skrzynecki for Belonging, so markers would also be full aware of this fact.
The problem is that even if you use other poems in the text, the markers will just think "Oh, this person just flipped to another page of Immigrant Chronicle the night before and chose it"

I don't know what your teacher is on about. :S
