it smells like crap, litters the streets, is should be banned everywhere, i have no problems with that. if i'm sitting behind a smoker i move, i'm not going to breathe their crap, but at the same time i don't see why i should have to move.

I hate the smell of cigarette smoke but my mother smokes so there isnt much I can do about it until I go to uni.

But in a public place I dont see why I should have to move because a person wants a smoke (and no my mother doesnt smoke in public)

I only smoke in outdoor places, but I will definitely move away from crowds if I'm going to light up, it's just common courtesy. I don't see why I should be banned from smoking in public, though. I don't litter and I don't blow it in other people's faces.

Nah. If people want to smoke and kill themselves, go ahead. But like Erin said, move away from crowds etc.

Females smoke more than males statistically. BoS members are a little reflection to that. :p

Err, by the one male and one female in this thread who've said that they smoke? Someone obviously failed kindergarten maths.

I don't mind smokers even though I'm not one of them. I do have a few problems with the dickheads who smoke near me in a confinded place, like a shop or something.
If I wanted to inhale smoke I would stand downwind of a fire.

I haven't seen a beach packed with cigarette butts cause I don't go to Sydney beaches. The problem is really that little kid are around. That has nothing to d with the litter though. Of course, nothing against cigarette smokers here, but stopping alot of the litter in public has to start somewhere, and smokers are an obvious target.

Still, they have safe heroine injecting rooms (where druggos get free needles whereas diabetics pay for theirs) why can't they have safe smoking rooms?

Beaches shouldn't have to be spoiled by garbage bins everywhere. If you light up at the beach, there's nowhere to stub your butt out except the sand, which works mighty well, and then what are you going to do with it? You're going to put it in your pocket or your bag until you get to a bin? I don't think so. It has such a direct impact on the environment. And there are campaigns targetting general littering, fines and all those tosser ads. I don't see how it's a huge inconvenience to wander up onto the street to suck on your cig. I've only ever seen people smoke on Sydney beaches and it's not like they're a huge distance from the next block of concrete anyway, with their blasted sand dunes and lack of littoral forestation.

Well, this law doesn't affect me as I don't go to the beach, but my dad always puts his butts back in the cigarette packet. That's always an option. I think it's fair enough that people shouldn't smoke if they are in close proximity with non-smokers, but if people are doing the right thing (i.e, putting their butts in the bin or back in the cigarette packet), then if there is no one around I don't see an issue with it.

EDIT: Although I do realise that cigarette butts are a big littering issue. My point was just that I don't see why the few who do do the right thing should be punished.

I think smoking is a disgusting habit, but if people want to do it and slowly kill themselves, then fine. I just have a problem with having to breathe it in, in which case I just move away (but I really shouldn't have to), and also having to breathe in someone's odour after they've smoked, especially in a room or confined space.
I would like to see it banned in public, but that probably won't ever happen.

errr, santaslayer, maybe you shouldn't use a term unless you actually know what it means

i don't agree with a total ban in public, but at much as the beach thing is a pain in the ass for me, i still ultimately agree with it i think

I don't want to sit on a beach and have to breathe in some fucking cigarette smoker's poison or look at the result of their foul addiction (i.e. cigarette butts).

Sorry, glycerine - you may be a 'considerate smoker' (which is bullshit any wany you look at it), but you're one in a million.

I'm not 'one in a million', many smokers are exactly like me, but people have a tendency to focus on bad things.

PS. How is it bullshit? Why can't someone be a considerate smoker?

I have yet to meet more than five 'considerate smokers' - or at least those who consider themselves considerate; because in my books, there's no such thing. Smoking itself is an affront - and no matter how far away you stand from people, they can still smell it, taste it, hate it. I do.

I've seen too many cigarette butts floating in our waterways and too many people (myself included) being thrown into coughing fit from people who breathe vile smoke directly into your lungs (and more people die from passive smoking like that than people who actually smoke - smokers breathe their smoke from a filter, and we don't). You may consider yourself considerate, glycerine, and I'm sure you do the best you can to prevent people from having to suffer from your habit. But that doesn't change the fact that you do.
