I agree with it, but there is little point in complaining about the current situation... You should know by now that if you enter a pub/tavern there may well be a smoker or two (or three or four) nearby. If you do not like the smoke, then head towards the smoke-free areas (as I tend to do).

I'm not happy as I'm a smoker and so for me it's personally a pain in the ass. However I do understand the reasoning behind it. On triple j today someone suggested that it should be up to the owner of the club/pub as to whether it's a smoking venue or not which I agree with more so than a *total* ban.

you dont understand how frustrating it is for a non smoker to walk outside in public then to walk past a smoker and either smell the fact that they stink like shit or smell the clod of smoke around them.

hahaha i know. you move up wind from them and the wind changes direction. the cloud just seems to wan to follow you around. you hold your breath to walk past and you can't hold it in long enough because the entire side of the building is full of smokers lined up. also at train stations. its almost inescapable.

The Australian is ok, but I think that I prefer the 'safest Labor seat' in Australia... I really could not care about The Australian providing a supposedly more 'objective' view, and I tend to read through both if something happens to pop up, anyway.

At least with uni prices I can get both for the price of one, too (excellent reading material for the train).

That distinction was quite clear on Monday. Now I can see the value in looking through both, even though I prefer one over the other.

i think its a great idea, and i support it.
even though i'm against smoking, thornydevil's idea of 'smoking pubs' is a good one. an idea i suggest would be for bar's to buy licences to be a 'smoking' venue with workers who sign documentation stating they do not mind working in these venues as they already smoke or whatever and understand the employment hazards that come with this occupation. its no different from working in other employs with hazards like mining/radiology/steel mills. though 'beer gardens' are exempt from this new legislation.
I totally agree with your proposal. Though the actual ban is a nuisance as i quite enjoy the occasional dowry at est.

I think the ban has good intentions, but I think people should still be allowed to smoke in areas that are outdoors but still part of the pub/club (ie beer gardens).
I personally don't smoke Australian cigarettes but I think that there should be some pubs/clubs that allow it (like the previous suggestion to have a smoking licence). That way people who don't smoke but don't mind having it around them can socialise with their smoker friends.

These bans may not have much affect on Australian customers, but they definately will with customers that are visiting from overseas. For anyone who has been to Europe, you know that they smoke an awful lot over there, and I'm sure they would be very upset with not being able to smoke inside pubs/clubs, and therefore would not visit them as often.

Without the bans we are pretty lucky with the small amount of smokers anyway! When I visited Austria, every pub I walked into had a thick haze of smoke; and probably about 90% of the people smoked - in fact there are so many smokers there that by the end of the trip I had turned from someone completely disgusted by cigarettes, to a social smoker. (Although their cigarettes have less "bad stuff" in them, hence why I don't smoke Australian ones.)

Hahaha thats gold.

But yeah, SMH if you ask me, is a bit right-winged. Though it is really quality stuff, and we are lucky we have such a paper in Aus, the closest thing they have in the US is the New York Times, which is realy a bit of a joke.

Personally, I'm against smoking, but taking away peoples rights to smoke is wrong. They should have seperate bars, one for smokers and another for non-smokers.

When it comes down to it, its just a blatant case of discrimination.

I don't think it is taking away people's right to smoke. People don't have the right to kill others. If smokers want to kill themselves, then they can but they have NO RIGHT TO KILL OTHERS!

These people should be the ones with awful cancers! The world is an unfair place full of discrimination. Who cares if its discrimination to smokers! Do you think you would say this if you dying from passive smoke?

Thats why the legislation is being enforeced in pubs and clubs because hospitality workers are dying each year from passive smoking

There is no study showing any correlation between passive smoke and disease except for in long time bar/club workers.

You want to bitch about somebody who is killing people go bitch about people who own overly polluting cars, because they are causing far more damage than any smoker.
How bout known murderers? Like John Howard or Bush, or any number of American ex-presidents?

Smokers have long been looked down apon, quite frankly i think it is BS.
