We never did this prac so could anyone outline what happened here?

we just did a flame test where we sprayed some sodium something (can't remember what right now... sorry) and looked at the spectrum through a spectrometer. There were mostly orange, reds and yellow. Then we just looked up the proper spectrum on the net and compared them. Hope this helps a little

Yeah, sodium makes a yellow-orange colour. I cant remember ours, but it was probably table salt (NaCl)
