all this crap about soft subjects is bullshit, you do the subjects you are comfortable with and enjoy. it is possible for someone to get a very good UAI, it someone gets 90+ in general maths that will only help their UAI.

So you're saying people choose hospitality and other VET courses because they are the smartest people? You're a fuckhead!

or close the thread. nothing is going to be agreed upon here, its simply the same arguments going around in circles.
I disagree, the arguments are moving in a linear direction.

Most of my subjects would be considered as soft as a penis after seeing Amanda Van Stone, General Math, Biology, Drama, Studies of Religion they're all in the soft subjects category. However, unlike you my interests and talents lie in other places. I would have also loved to do Art, aww shit another soft subject only for those with echidna sized brains. This isn't about intelligence, no one is arguing that everyone has the same mental capability when it comes to things like math and english, but honestly who gives a rats arse. Obviously I'm going to fail at life because I'm not exactly like you Black.Magic.
Get off your soap box and go study some more.

'linear' means a straight line. So the discussion is progressing in a straight line, not going in circles.

its OK to do watever subjects ur cool with, but in the end the ppl at UAC do their thing, and the trends show that those who do the harder subjects, and do them well, get rewarded well - that is from past experience, may be different this year (highly unlikely)

In any case, u cant do anythin bout it!!!

so jus do the best in what eva subjects u do!!

I do 'soft' subjects cos I'm lazy haha
Hospitality, Drama and Gen Maths
But I chose drama and hosp because I like them and I dropped down to general cos I was failing badly in maths

I also do business but I wouldn't consider that soft because theres so much you have to know and it all winds into eachother and is confusing

I am basically doing what OP calls, "soft subjects". However, I am not ashamed of that fact.

People choose subjects that fit their interests and their own academic potential and abilities. Everyone has their own freedom to do so and it's not your place to judge whether we are to do that course or not.

Well, I can't say I can be bothered reading all the responses. I read the first page and got bored. Now, I suppose I will have to concede and agree that we must tolerate anti-intellectualism in this country. It's the Australian way to dislike anybody smarter than us yet doesn't dumb themselves down. Heck, if they act smarter than us, they must be elitist and arrogant, right? I hate tall poppy syndrome and all the anti-intellectual tendencies that are fostered and approved of in this country.

To all those people who do five units of history: have you ever heard that it's better to specialise at a tertiary level? You're not getting a balanced secondary education if you specialise so much that half your UAI may be based on history alone. No, I don't think four units of maths is that unbalanced, because English is compulsory, hence all the maths and science students must be judged on their English ability too.

To all the people who resorted to profanity and insults to defend their narrow-minded point of view in this thread and many other bitch-fest threads on this godforsaken site, all you are doing is showcasing your stupidity. It doesn't matter though, in Australia nobody cares.

It depends on your ability ie if you are capable of doing advanced/ext maths or english but you are doing standard or general

please learn basic spelling first before you start having a go at the people that do these so called "soft" subjects.

you have an "undersized" brain as well

fucking idiot.
Ah, how typical of a bigot. You singled out the one and only spelling error in my wonderfully crafted spiel. This just shows that my point of view is so logical and well expressed that you draw a blank when it comes time to disagree with me or agree with me. This highlights your lack of sophistication, as does your blanket statement "fucking idiot". Two can play at that game: I could single out the fact that you neglected one of the most fundamental rules of English: that each sentence is begun with a capital letter. I could then go on to make a stupid statement that you are clearly missing a good 40% of your brain because you can't even demonstrate proper use of the English language at the age of 17/18. But I'm not going to do that, because I'm not a bigot.

P.S. To all the people who questioned my choice to study visual art and French: I never said I was a genius. You seem to have fabricated that notion yourselves. I would study French Background Speakers if the course existed, but the fact of the matter is that the Board of Studies has not yet created a French language course that is adequately challenging for somebody of my linguistic capabilities. Oh yes, I do say so myself. Sue me. Also, French Extension is a bit of a joke. It's like the equivalent of English Standard.
Yes, I also study Visual Art, because I am a talented artist. No, that is not arrogance, it's just stating a fact. The BoS has not made this course sufficiently challenging. This is not my preference; I would prefer much more complex essay questions in the exam. But I suppose we must accommodate all the drop-kicks who choose VA because they want to waste time. I am exempt from the label 'bludger' (one who studies soft subjects) because I routinely achieve over 96% in each and every assessment task for the subject with an average of two hours study. The same is true for French. What I am saying is, if the BoS had the bravado to make French and VA more difficult, I could still achieve band 6 results every time. Am I arrogant, or merely different to all you anti-intellectual swine? Don't answer that, it's what's called a 'rhetorical question'.

Also, once and for all I would like to condemn Biology as a soft subject. It is a course that can be master one hundred percent simply by way of rote learning. You can conquer the course by making one 20-page word document of notes. That, to me, is not true academia. That is test of how well you can commit things to memory and regurgitate information in an exam situation.
The same goes for all of the soft subjects that people try to defend by saying 'oi but mate there's a shitload of shit to learn bro!'
Think about it. I'm condescending and loving it! If you want to disagree with me, please put a little bit of time into developing some eloquence; otherwise you come off as a bit of a simpleton. Not that that matters; we love simpletons here in Oz.

Sorry if you already addressed this, but I go to James Ruse as you claim to in your profile. As far as I know there is no one at our school that does the subjects you claim to do...just a little confused and curious

Yo, Dim Won, what is up?
Why did you quote the entire post when what you typed had nothing whatsoever to do with what I posted?
How could you possibly know what every single one of the JRAHS students study? Are you the principal? Anyway, is that really relevant to this forum?
