I got a question that has been puzzling me all day..I hope someone can help me out here

I am just wondering if it is true that IF majority of people in my Geography performs poorly in both the internal and external HSC exams, but 2 or 3 people excels, will those who perform poorly significantly pull down the marks or UAI of those who excel?

Any help is appreciated.

If you are right up the top it's not going to matter as long as you improve on your internal mark in the exam.

Not really, as long as those top 2 or 3 perform in the exams as well.

From experiance YES. There were 14 people in my grade doing biology and 10 people were consistently failing getting 20-30, all under 50 however. There were 2 ppl getting 50-60 and me and another were getting 80+. Come the hsc every single person in my grade passed. This annoyed me as me and the other person getting 80+ ended up with 73 and 71. Their marks were increased as most of them didnt have the capacity to get the marks while mine got pulled down. I am 100% certain my raw mark was 80+ and i think it could have been more towards the 85+ mark.

But dont let this put you off. My school isnt exactly one of the smart ones lol and if you can get a big lead you should be able to pull it off but in general if majority do badly your marks will unfortunately be affected.

Would it matter or change your decision to do the course if the answer was yes? You choose the course for a reason don't let factors that you can't control determine if you continue with it or not.

Oh and yes people can get pulled up and down depending but it happens in every course with every class.

Hahaha your logical reasoning is reasonably logical. Too bad everyone spends more time trying to figure out the scaling system rather than trying to achieve the best marks possible.

No. The bottom people may get pulled up..but the top people don't get pulled down by any means. It all depends on how the marks are distributed within the class.

*sigh* Exactly that. No matter what I or anyone says most people will probably still stress/worry about it. Instead of putting it in the back of their mind and learning that even if it is the case there is nothing they can do about it.

Pretty much, if you come first, you get half your own exam mark, half the examination mark that came first in your school. Second: half own exam mark, half 2nd highest exam mark from the school.

It doesn't mean that all the marks will be shared around, and the higher ranked students will suffer from the laggers behind them.

Oh and just something I found in that document linked to in the thread -

Some students are initially excluded from the moderation of the assessments of their group. These include:
2. Students whose performance in the examination is markedly below what was expected on the basis of their assessments.

In other words - if someone does really badly, they won't drag the rest of the class down. If they only do slightly worse than expected, unless they are in the top couple of students or the bottom couple of students, they will have no significant impact on anyone else's marks.

Thanks without wings...yeah i mean teachers may hav marked easier at my school giving us a false sense of security etc...but nothing i can do now whats done is done and well im in uni now so hsc doesnt matter anymore lol
