well there are in melb for $18-$40 / night (depending if you want shared accomidation or not- dorm style rooms/ single / double rooms )
at the Youth Hostels all around Flinders st and up and down Swanston street.. they have a YHA too as well as little companies

the hotels can be rather expensive in Melb and Brissy.. the cheapest in melbourne is at 95 for a single room, which is not very nice (better staying in a YHA )
You get a bed.. thats it.. (for 90 - 95 bucks in the main part of the city)
120 will get you a nicer room, microwave and small view.. (although not much to view in Melb's cbd) 150-250/ night deluxe rooms in Swanston st..
300-350/ night in Swanston will get you one of those 5 star rooms

Melbourne suburbs:

From St Kilda to about South Oakleigh, prices vary.. and they are mainly motels rather than nice accomidation (hotels etc) From St Kilda down to South Oakleigh - south Oak, is about an hour by train. St kilda, 20 mins by tram..
you wouldn't want to go too much further than South Oakleigh..the Dangedons are expensive and a long way

There ya go - thats Melbourne Accom. for ya

Actually OJ, you should wait to go to Melbourne until April. Go to the Grand Prix and pay $98 for four days general admin. If you ask nicely, i have relos who live in melbourne, could get you free accommodation!

Hmm, plain old touristy things ^.^
melb's quite small (well the CBD is )

some of the main/ best touristy things are: (random order lol)

- Luna Park (st Kilda) - Only open on weekends, and during school holidays
- St Kilda beach, and Arthur street.
- Shopping streets such as Chapelle st, down southbank and Bourke to Lonsdale Streets, Collins street etc.
- The Yarra River - take one of the /free/ ferries down the long yarra river
- check out the MCG , Rod Laver arena, and the Old Olympic stadium (ok, not if you don't like sports ^.^)
- Royal Botannic Gardens (st Kilda)
- the Free City Circle tram that takes you everywhere aroudn the central CBD for free ^^
- all the other trams (5.90 for a daily tripper - trams, trains and buses)
- Rialto Towers- *the tallest building in Southern Hemisphere, Like observatory tower, Bar and all 253 m high- overlooking the city on Collins Street
- The famous Crown Casino on South Bank
- Bells Beach
- Brighton Beach, South Brighton and Middle Brighton
- The Dangedons (mountains)
- The Melbourne Zoo
- The Melbourne Arts Centres (down past Flinders street- just down from the main square)
- Federation Square
- National Gallery of Victoria
- The Melbourne Museum (including IMAX)
- Carlton
- Great Ocean Road (if you have a car)
- Phillip Island ( a island where you see thousands and thousands of penguins- you can go by car, or go on one of the tours )

They are just some of the things i remember.

Erm, not so much.. But i would suggest upper Chappelle street - the Main road down ST Kilda, and Lonsdale street- and perhaps Little Collins ^.^
oh yeah, and in carlton- I forget what the street and club was called but erm.. carlton has a few good nightclubs and bars. (by the way, all those streets above are in the main CBD but chappelle you need to catch a tram too and St kilda... they are south of the city- Carlton Is North)
oh yeah and umm.. . Southbank too (simple walk from main train station in melbourne: Flinders Street Station )

Lol ^.^, i went backpacking round melbourne after the HSC, and you kinda get to know your places when backpacking :p

Really, not the greatest.. probably teh best spots are chapelle and down southbank - actually south bank better.
but I'd reckon sydneys alot better for nightlife that is.. melbournes good for a short holiday- not the most exciting place..

Yup, Luna Park in Melbourne was the very first in Australia ^.^ - except its not free entry, like ours... hasn't been closed down a trillion times.. is by the beach, and no stupid dumbass apartment blocks next to it, or infront of it.. and its only open on weekends ^_^

Yeah Moree is kinda a little out- You really need a car to get there (although you can catch a country link train.. it takes a while though).
but its nice! ^_^
(north west NSW, near the border to QLD )
oh and yeah, Luna park Melbourne has that ugly face too- but its slightly different.. the grin isn't fake and happy.. >its kinda twisted and odd.

like Brissy or Melby... I'd suggest Melby though!! :D
even though Moree is kinda nice..
Or Wagga ... although wagga can get a little boring after a day :p Oooh
hey, Go to Towoomba ! :D - its about 2 and half hours drive, or bus trip from Brisbane- the "garden City' really really nice.
