Re: song lyrics for imaginative journeys

hey you've interested me in 'constellations' by jack johnson mainly because i have to link a text to coleridge. so how do you think you can link it to 'this lime tree bower my prison' apart from the fact that he sings about sitting under a tree?

Puff the Magic Dragon...sounds stupid but wait..listen to it and you'll see..

btw did you know that it was a 'code' song? They weren't allowed to say Marijuna in their lyrics so Puff was invented..little jackie was his dealer who dies of an overdose.....just in case you're interested..

Bust use it it's good

I suggest you DON'T do Imagine by John Lennon as it often considered 'cliche' by many markers and may not get you the highest marks. Other songs that haven't been mentioned:

Yellow Submarine by The Beatles
Welcome to my Nightmare by Alice Cooper
Return to Fantasy and Beautiful Dream by Uriah Heep

For an assessment I also did The Wanderer by U2. It's very good in terms of religious allusion etc.

lol, puff the magic dragon...
I like that song... :D

great ideas here! I'm thinking of picking either Space Oddity or Sounds of Silence... both are great songs....

another song you can chose is: "Tangled up in Blue" by Bob Dylan from the album Blood On the Tracks (which is the title of the last text in the stimulus booklet)

bird girl by Antony and the Johnsons is quite useful as a related material.

I'm considering using Mad World by Gary Jules (he did a cover, the original is by Tears For Fears I believe.)
If anyone gets any good ideas for this as a related text, let me know?
Thanks.

Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkins

the world is a vampire, sent to drain
secret destroyers, hold you up to the flames
and what do I get, for my pain
betrayed desires, and a piece of the game
even though I know-I suppose I'll show
all my cool and cold-like old job

despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
someone will say what is lost can never be saved
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

now I'm naked, nothing but an animal
but can you fake it, for just one more show
and what do you want, I want change
and what have you got
when you feel the same
even though I know-I suppose I'll show
all my cool and cold-like old job

despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
someone will say what is lost can never be saved
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

tell me I'm the only one
tell me there's no other one
jesus was an only son yeah
tell me I'm the chosen one
jesus was an only son for you

despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
someone will say what is lost can never be saved
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a
despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

tell me I'm the only one
tell me there's no other one
jesus was an only son for you

and I still believe that I cannot be saved
and I still believe that I cannot be saved
and I still believe that I cannot be saved
and I still believe that I cannot be saved

In general, songs make about the least valuable texts, because:
a) mostly they don't have enough depth to explore. Songs, speeches, basically any text to be presented orally needs to focus on just one or a few specific ideas, otherwise the listener would not be able to absorb all of the detail.
b) people pick songs that they like rather than songs that are good texts.
c) if you use a song, you can't really take it out of context of the music, as the composer uses music to create meaning. So unless you're a music student you're not going to know how to analyse the music properly.

I'm doing Drops of Jupiter but am having terrible trouble trying to find a relation to the tempest and an imaginative journey.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to relate it at all.
Help would be much appreciated!!!

Yeah but people do write better about stuff they're pasionate about and there are sometimes exceptions to your first and third rules. Like Atlantis by Donovan or American Pie by Don Maclean but American Pie might be a stretch because no one knows what It means and Maclean isn't telling! :( Dela would be a good song as well.
