i wouldnt say its frowned upon by all english teachers in general, but a lot of them would probly see that you could choose a more challenging text to analyse than song lyrics. generally, song lyrics are just rhyme, rhythm, similes and metaphors, but so are a lot of childrens texts and poems. it would probly depend on the song, and your teacher, but theres no reason why you cant do a song. but if your teacher really hates the idea of it, maybe not do song lyrics for your hsc texts, as they might mark you down for it?

Crap, I've done the song Bowl Of Oranges by Bright eyes as one of my texts for the Changing self assignment, but I got a lot out of it and I think it's a fairly advanced analysis (says me). But from memory I do remember my teacher saying it's best not to do song lyrics unless your sure.

I used a song for one of my related material pieces for a HSC journeys assessment task just last week, and i think my teacher actually liked it. She said it was a very interesting choice..
The song was Hermod's Ride To Hel by Amon Amarth if you're wondering..

Premise; co-premise; conclusion. LAWL.

1) You may do a song.
2) A song is similar to a poem in the fact that it is more or less a poem; therefore, you also analyse the music.
3) You may not do a poem. Also, as songs as similar to poems, doing them is frowned upon.

!) You may do a song, but it, or even you, may be looked upon unfavourably, for a song and a poem are alike.
So poems aren't good either?

I think they were saying you shouldn't do a song AND a poem.. one or the other is fine.

We have to do 5 texts, 4 different mediums. I'm doing 2 poems, 1 song lyrics, 1 book and 1 movie. I was originally doing an article. but my teacher advised be against it because it had the word 'fuck' in it.

@Annalisee: You could censor the "fuck".
Well I had... but she said it was still implied and innapropriate.
Oh well, it's done now.

Hmm. This is freaking me out now. I'm not too worried about doing a song...just the subject of my song deals with sex changes and abortions and having sex. But I don't see why I can't do this...we do a lot of texts in English with sexual themes and swearing. It's not like we're not allowed to see the MA15+ movies anymore...so they don't censor that sort of stuff for us..... Opinions?.

I think it'd be suitable as long as it features your topic. You could ask your teacher or someone from the English faculty about this.

I don't see a problem with doing song lyrics. As long as they're relevant and you can analyse it sufficiantly, its all good. As for the additional texts, i don't think the medium matters all that much, but if i were you i'd choose texts that aren't so dissimilar that it's impossible to compare them. Obviously, they will inevitably be different, but the underlying principles should be similar so you can draw parallels...am i making any sense?

We did "Beneath Clouds" at the end of last year for English. Every 2nd word was "fuck".

Yes, with the whole doing a song thing, our teachers specifically outlined (over and over again^o^) not to do anything mainstream.

it annoys me when people analyse songs.
Unless the lyrics are actually breathtakingly amazing, then don't do it.
A kid in my year 9 class analysed Gold-digger by Kanye West, I had to listen to his 5 minute speech on it, it was awful. The worse part was, he actually got a decent mark.
