Hey guys,

I was supposed to do a speech today on what the Australian Identity means to us, it had to go for 3 minutes.

I got outta it and have 1-3 day to do it. Can't think of a start off and points to include.

If someone could help me would GREATLY appreciate it! TY!

What does a citizenship test have to do with 'the Australian identity'? Isn't that taking things a tad bit too literally? It sounds like the OP is talking about a more metaphoric way of looking at the Aussie identity. Traits like mischief, larrikinism, mateship, you know, all that shit they taught you to take pride in when you did Australian History.

You can talk about how our national identity was largely shaped by the perception the world had of us, how they embraced and essentially created this identity for us after WWI, and how we've in turn embraced and taken pride in it. Also factor in the multiculturalism that's present in today's Australia, and how this acceptance and tolerance and blahblahblah has helped perpetuate the culturally-diverse, friendly, laid-back image our country presents.

Basically just rattle off a bunch of patriotic bullshit that recycles the garbage your History teacher spoonfed you. And since it's asking what it means to YOU, make sure you ascertain it's your own personal response.

Again, only in the literal sense. Normally questions asking you about the 'australian identity' don't mean "rattle of how one can become australian, thus earning an australian identity". That's so dull and straightforward. It's a personal response, not a Citizenship 101.

Here is a possible opener if you like...

The Australian Identity cannot, by no means, be defined under a single heading nor definition. Instead, the identity that we as Australians present to the international community is diverse. It incorporates our variety of cultures, beliefs and values - From the coast of Bondi to the Aboriginal history in the Northern Territory. We as Australians are a diverse group of citizens, who differ socially, economically and even politically, yet we still are proud to stand under the flag for the land we call home.

Hope that helps
