My teacher was telling me today how a class average can affect my assessment mark, i mean is this true, i know moderation involves ranking and i never read about the part about how the class average class can affect you, because i rank first in physics chem and 2 unit maths, and the rest of the class is really not into studying.....................

i mean how does that work with the class average and all...... am i safe from all underperforming students by coming first....

if you are coming first then the rest of the class' performance doesnt influence your mark, regarding your uai. as long as you come first in the externals too.

He doesn't even have to come first in the externals... an assessment rank of first means complete immunity.

i'm talking about the final hsc mark. i see it from the perspective that, their assessment will be the highest, but unless they come first, their external mark will NOT be the highest.

but going over the post again, i see where i erred.

i'll try to explain how i see it. i'm not sure if it is correct.

the whole standardising process is about fittting everyone on the normal curve. to normalise a certain mark, you use the formula: (exam mark - avg mark) / standard deviation. this will give a new set of data, ie new set of standardised marks for each student.
i would assume they would do this to check for percentiles and certain cut-off marks?
would i be correct to say that they are trying to link the performance of the school to that of all the students in the state through a normalised set of marks.

The distribution of raw assessment marks for your class is shaped so that their average is the same as the average of the examination marks for your class.
